Chapter 10 - The Unwritten Horizon

Two months later.
The Texas sun was rising over the wide, flat stretches of Interstate 10, casting a brilliant shade of deep gold and purple across the vast desert landscape.
The divorce was officially finalized. The house had been sold to a young civilian couple, the proceeds split according to the court decree after legal fees were deducted. Daniel’s military record remained pristine; he had requested and received a hardship transfer and honorable discharge option, choosing to leave active duty behind to start entirely fresh.
Inside his heavy-duty pickup truck, the air conditioning blew crisp and cool. The truck bed was loaded with everything Daniel owned: his army duffel bags, a toolbox, a few crates of clothes, and his favorite acoustic guitar.
On the passenger seat lay his civilian discharge papers, his passport, and a brand-new road atlas of the United States. He had no permanent address, no rigid schedule, and no expectations. For the first time in his adult life, he was entirely free—unburdened by military orders, and unburdened by the lies of a broken marriage.
His smartphone, resting in the center console cup holder, chimed softy with an incoming text notification.
Daniel glanced down at the illuminated screen while keeping one hand on the steering wheel. The text came from an unknown, unlisted phone number. The message was brief, consisting of only six words:
“He asked about your name today.”
Daniel stared at the glowing text on the screen as the dashed white lines of the highway swept past his window at seventy miles per hour. A thousand different thoughts rushed through his mind—memories of what could have been, lingering traces of pain, curiosity, and the phantom weight of a baby he had held for only a few fleeting seconds in a quiet living room.

He didn't type a reply. He didn't save the number.
Instead, Daniel reached down, tapped the power button on the side of the phone, and turned the screen completely dark. He tossed the phone back into the console, placed both hands firmly on the steering wheel, pressed his foot down on the accelerator, and drove straight toward the endless open horizon ahead.
