Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Home

Back at the suburban house, the initial silence had given way to panic and decay. Without Daniel’s presence, the home felt hollow and cold. Emily sat on the edge of the master bed, clutching a warm bottle while little Leo nursed quietly. Her phone lay on the nightstand, its screen glowing with unread notifications and missed calls from her frantic parents, who had caught wind that something had gone terribly wrong upon Daniel's return.
Henry had completely ghosted her. Ever since Daniel had confronted him in his hallway, Henry had blocked Emily’s phone number, terrified of military court-martials, civil lawsuits, or another physical altercation with an active-duty Staff Sergeant.
Emily looked around the bedroom. Daniel’s empty civilian clothes hung neatly in the closet; his combat boots sat in the corner where he had left them before shipping out almost a year ago. She felt a crushing weight in her chest—the realization of what she had sacrificed for a few hours of drunken comfort during a dark, lonely night.
Her phone began to vibrate on the wood surface, buzzing loudly. She snatched it up instantly, hoping against hope that it was Daniel calling to say he wanted to talk. But the caller ID displayed a restricted government line.
She pressed the phone to her ear with trembling fingers. “Hello?”
“Is this Emily Carter?” a rigid, professional male voice asked.
“Yes... speaking. Who is this?”
“Ma'am, this is Master Sergeant Miller from Staff Sergeant Daniel Carter’s command structure at Fort Cavazos,” the officer stated coldly. “I am calling to inform you that Staff Sergeant Carter has submitted an official report regarding domestic misconduct involving a former service member, along with a formal request for emergency housing allocation and administrative separation assistance.”
Emily felt the room spin. “An administrative report? Is he... is he trying to get Henry discharged or punished?”
“That is an internal military matter, Mrs. Carter,” the Master Sergeant replied without a shred of sympathy. “My purpose in calling is to verify that you have been properly notified of his change of primary residence, and to advise you that all joint military spousal privileges and allotment distributions are currently under legal audit due to the pending divorce filing.”

“Please,” Emily begged, her voice cracking as she began to sob openly into the receiver. “Don't let him do this! He loves the Army, he loves his career! We can fix this if everyone just calm down!”
“Have a good day, Mrs. Carter,” the officer said curtly, and the line disconnected with a flat tone.
