Chapter 8 - The Vegas Bloodline

Forty-eight hours later, the penthouse suite of the Calloway estate was bathed in the warm, golden glow of a Nevada sunset. The smell of cordite, blood, and fear had been scrubbed clean, replaced by the scent of fresh white lilies, simmering chicken soup, and clean linen.
Downstairs, the Las Vegas underworld was reeling. In less than two days, the Calloway syndicate had executed a silent, total purge. With Declan Ward dead and the Vor mercenaries neutralized, Marcus had reasserted absolute control over every casino, port, and municipal board in the state. But this time, he had done it alongside his brother. Julian was recovering in the estate’s private medical wing, surrounded by twenty-four-hour security, with Eleanor refusing to leave his bedside.
In the master suite, the towering windows looked out over the glittering lights of the Strip.
On the oversized king bed, little Leo was sound asleep, his dark eyelashes resting against his plump, rosy cheeks, clutching a stuffed lion that Marcus had personally sent a helicopter to fetch from an exclusive toy boutique in Beverly Hills.
Rachel stood by the glass, watching the sun dip beneath the crimson horizon. She wore a soft cream cashmere sweater and jeans, her hair falling in gentle waves over her shoulders. She looked peaceful, but her hands were clasped tightly in front of her.
Soft, silent footsteps crossed the hardwood floor.
Marcus stepped up behind her. He wore a simple black linen shirt, the top buttons undone, his dark tattoos peeking out above the collar. He didn't say a word. He simply reached out and rested his large, warm hands on her waist, drawing her gently back against the broad, solid wall of his chest.
Rachel let out a long, shuddering breath, resting her head back against his collarbone, closing her eyes as the tension of the last four years finally drained from her soul.
"You're quiet," Marcus murmured, his lips brushing the crown of her head.
"I'm waiting to wake up," she confessed softly, turning slightly in his embrace to look up into his striking, dark face. "For four years, Marcus, every single morning I woke up terrified. Terrified that Ward would find Leo. Terrified that you would discover who I was and kill me before I could explain. Terrified that you would never remember me."
Marcus looked down at her, his black eyes soft with an emotion so deep, so profound, it stole the breath from her lungs.
"I never truly forgot you, Elena," he whispered, calling her by her true name. "Even when my mind was trapped in that fog—even when I thought I was sitting in that damn wheelchair waiting for an assassin's bullet—every time you walked into the room, my heart raced. Every time your fingers touched my skin, the rage inside me turned to quiet."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, silver baptismal medal with Leo’s initials. He gently slipped the delicate chain around her neck, letting the pendant rest against her chest.
"Julian told me what you did," Marcus said, his voice husky. "How you abandoned your career, your family name, your entire life, just to take a job emptying bedpans and enduring my miserable temper, just so you could watch over my medication and make sure I didn't die from Ward's poison."
"I loved you," she said simply, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I loved you in Switzerland when you had nothing, Marcus. I didn't care about the casinos. I didn't care about the billions. I loved the man who held our son on that snowy night and cried because he thought he wasn't good enough to be a father."
Marcus swallowed hard, a rare vulnerability crossing his chiseled features.
"I wasn't good enough," he said quietly. "My entire life has been built on violence, fear, and shadows. My father lived in blood, and I thought that was the only inheritance I had to give."
He took her face between his large, calloused palms, his thumbs gently wiping away a stray tear.
"But when I saw you standing between me and those guns... when I saw you fire that shot on the mountain to save Julian... you showed me what real strength is. You brought my family back from the dead, Elena. You brought *me* back."
A tiny, sleepy voice broke through the quiet of the room.
"Mama?"
Rachel turned. Leo was sitting up in the middle of the massive bed, rubbing his eyes with his fists, his messy black hair sticking up in all directions.
Marcus’s face transformed. The terrifying, ruthless mafia king melted into pure, unconditional warmth. He crossed the room in two long strides, scooped the toddler up into his arms, and hoisted him effortlessly onto his broad shoulder.
Leo giggled, wrapping his small arms around Marcus’s neck, burying his face into his father's cheek. "Daddy! You're tall!"
"Yeah, buddy," Marcus laughed, a rich, booming sound that filled every corner of the suite. "I'm tall. And you're never going to have to hide again."
Rachel walked over, standing beside them, resting her hand on Marcus’s arm. Leo reached down and grabbed her fingers, completing the circle.
Marcus looked at the woman beside him and the child in his arms.
"There's just one problem," Marcus said, a teasing, dangerous glint returning to his dark eyes.
Rachel arched an eyebrow, smiling. "Oh? And what's that, Mr. Calloway?"
"Your caregiver contract," Marcus replied, leaning down until his lips were a fraction of an inch from hers. "The terms were entirely unacceptable. You’re severely underpaid for the amount of trouble you cause."
"Is that so?" Rachel whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "And what terms do you propose?"
Marcus didn't answer with words. He closed the distance, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate, possessive kiss that made her toes curl against the floor. It was a kiss full of promise, of redemption, and of a future forged in unbreakable steel.
When he finally pulled back, both of them breathless, he pressed his forehead to hers.
"Lifetime employment," Marcus growled softly. "As my wife. As the Queen of the Calloway empire. What do you say, Dr. Vance?"
Rachel wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down for another kiss, tears of pure joy spilling over her cheeks.

"I accept the promotion, Marcus," she whispered against his lips. "I accept."
