Chapter 7 - The Brother's Return

The wind screamed across the open helipad, whipping Rachel’s chestnut hair wildly around her face. The laser sight from Ward’s pistol painted a bright, dancing red dot directly between her collarbones.

Rachel didn't flinch. Her Glock was raised, locked onto Ward's chest, but she knew the caliber of his weapon. A .50 Action Express round at this distance would tear right through her Kevlar.

Marcus stood twenty feet away, his body shielding little Leo, who had buried his face tightly into Marcus’s neck, whimpering softly.

"Lower the gun, Declan," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm—the flat, cold tone of an executioner who had already signed the death warrant. "It’s over. Your mercenaries are dead. Your shell companies have been seized. My mother is currently uploading every wiretap and offshore routing number you ever created to the Department of Justice."

Ward laughed—a high, ragged, desperate sound that bordered on madness.

"You think this is about offshore accounts?!" Ward spat, his eyes bulging with manic fury. "Your father treated me like a dog for thirty years! I built the Calloway empire while David sat in his penthouse sipping single-malt scotch! When he died, that empire should have been mine! Not yours! Not Julian's! And certainly not this little bastard's!"

Ward shifted the gun’s aim from Rachel toward little Leo.

"If I can't have it," Ward roared, "nobody does!"

Before Ward’s finger could complete the trigger pull, the snowbank ten feet to his left exploded.

A figure wrapped in a bloody medical tourniquet, moving on sheer spite and unholy adrenaline, tackled Ward around the waist.

*Julian.*

The shot went wild, the massive bullet blowing out the cockpit window of the idling helicopter with a deafening blast.

Ward and Julian crashed into the icy asphalt, rolling toward the sheer drop of the two-hundred-foot cliff. Julian was bleeding profusely from his chest, his strength failing, but his hands were locked around Ward’s gun wrist like steel manacles.

"Marcus! Shoot him!" Julian choked out, blood spraying from his lips as Ward gouged his thumbs into Julian's wounded shoulder.

"Julian!" Eleanor screamed, limping out from the drainage tunnel supported by Diego.

Ward managed to wrench his right arm free, bringing the heavy slide of the pistol down across Julian’s face. Julian slumped sideways, dazed, his grip breaking.

Ward scrambled to his feet at the very edge of the precipice, panting, blood dripping from his broken nose. He raised the gun toward Julian’s head.

"Die, you little cockroach—"

*BANG.*

A single shot echoed off the mountain face.

Ward froze.

The silver Desert Eagle slipped from his numbed fingers, clattering onto the rocks. Ward looked down at his chest.

A neat, round hole was drilled directly through his breast pocket, smoke curling gently from the scorched cashmere.

Ward looked up, his eyes wide with shock.

Rachel stood with both hands locked around her Glock, the barrel smoking, her stance rock-solid, her emerald eyes cold and clear as mountain glass.

"That was for my father," Rachel said softly.

*BANG.*

A second shot took Ward through the shoulder, spinning him backward.

Ward teetered on the icy lip of the cliff, his arms flailing against the howling blizzard, his heel slipping on the frozen shale. He locked eyes with Marcus one last time, seeing only absolute, merciless indifference in the mafia billionaire’s gaze.

With a final, terrified shriek that was swallowed instantly by the wind, Declan Ward slipped over the edge, plummeting into the jagged abyss two hundred feet below.

Silence descended on the pad, broken only by the steady, rhythmic chop of the helicopter’s idling rotors and the soft whimpering of the child in Marcus’s arms.

Marcus moved instantly. He crossed the pad, dropped to one knee, and hauled Julian away from the cliff’s edge with one arm while keeping Leo secured with the other.

"Diego! Get the trauma kit!" Marcus barked.

"I've got him," Rachel said, dropping beside Julian, her medical training taking over without hesitation. She ripped open Julian's shirt, packing the wound with hemostatic gauze, her hands steady and commanding. "The bullet missed the subclavian artery. He's lost blood, but the lung hasn't collapsed again. He's going to make it."

Julian opened his heavy eyelids, looking up at Rachel with a faint, exhausted smile.

"You always... were bossy, Elena..." he whispered, his hand reaching out to weakly touch Leo’s boot. "Hey there, kiddo... told you your dad... would come."

Leo peeked out from Marcus’s chest, his little hand reaching down to pat Julian’s bloody cheek. "Uncle Jules..."

Eleanor collapsed beside her sons in the snow, her aristocratic mask completely shattered, wrapping both arms around Julian and burying her face into Marcus’s shoulder, weeping openly for the first time in fifteen years.

Marcus didn't move. He sat in the snow, surrounded by his mother, his brother, and the woman who had risked everything to save them all.

He looked up at Rachel. She was covered in grime, snow, and blood, her beautiful chestnut curls tangled in the wind, but to Marcus, she looked like an angel who had descended into hell just to drag him back into the light.

He reached out his free hand and caught hers, lacing his thick, scarred fingers tightly through hers.

"Let's go home," Marcus said softly.
