Chapter 38 - The Standoff at the Sub-Station

The blinding halogen beam pinned Ethan and Sarah against the rough granite wall of the maintenance tunnel. Behind the light, Helena’s silhouette loomed large, her arms resting steadily on the barrel of a military-grade suppressed carbine.
"Drop the rifle, Ethan," Helena commanded, her voice echoing with a calm, venomous authority. "Unless you want your daughter’s final memory of her father to be scraping his remains out of a drainage pipe."
"You won't get away with this, Helena," Sarah shouted, stepping half out from behind Ethan’s shoulder, her voice steady and ringing with defiance. "The federal marshals already have the master corporate ledgers. Arthur Vance has the wiretap logs from your Swiss accounts. Even if you kill us here, the Vanguard Trust is liquidated as of midnight."
Helena let out a sharp, dismissive laugh that grated against the stone walls.
"You still don't understand, do you, dear sister?" Helena sneered, taking a slow step forward into the dim fringe of their flashlight beam. "The Vanguard Trust was never the real prize. It was a decoy—a massive, noisy distraction designed to draw the federal government's attention away from the true asset registry."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "What asset?"
"The deep-water mineral rights beneath this entire mountain basin," Helena replied, her smile turning razor-sharp. "Rights that were deeded directly to the Hayes homestead in 1894 under a federal sovereign immunity clause—a clause that only becomes active when the direct bloodline heirs are legally declared deceased for a period of exactly seven years and one day."
Ethan’s blood ran cold. Tomorrow morning—precisely at sunrise—would mark seven years to the day since Sarah’s supposed death.
"That's why you staged the boating accident," Ethan realized, horror dawning in his voice. "You didn't just want to steal our land; you needed Sarah legally dead for seven years so the sovereign immunity clause would transfer the mineral rights directly to the corporate trust!"
"Bingo, brother-in-law," Helena mocked, tightening her grip on the carbine. "And with you and Sarah both conveniently disappearing into a tragic 'mining accident' in the old Prohibition tunnels tonight, the estate defaults cleanly to the sole surviving relative: me."
Helena’s finger tightened on the trigger.
At that exact microsecond, Sarah didn't hesitate. With a violent shove, she threw Ethan sideways into a shallow alcove in the stone wall, hurling her own body across the narrow corridor just as the carbine fired.
*CRACK!*
The bullet sparked off the granite wall inches from Sarah’s shoulder, showering them in white-hot stone fragments.
Ethan roared with primal fury. Pushing off the rock wall, he didn't aim for Helena—he raised the heavy hunting rifle and fired directly at the old overhead water valve directly above her head.
*BOOM!*
The heavy slug tore through the rusted iron pipe with deafening concussive force. Instantly, a high-pressure geyser of freezing mountain water burst from the ruptured main, slamming directly into Helena with the force of a tidal wave.
Helena shrieked as the wall of freezing water smashed into her chest, knocking her off her feet and sending her sliding backward across the ice-slicked stone floor. Her carbine slipped from her grip, clattering away into the dark runoff current as she struggled against the freezing torrent.
"Ethan! Grab the ledger!" Sarah yelled over the roaring rush of water, scrambling toward the control box near the turbine bulkhead.

Ethan lunged forward through the freezing spray, grabbing Helena by the collar of her wool coat before she could reach her fallen weapon, pinning her hard against the icy stone wall as the water rose around their boots.
