Chapter 5 - The Kneeling Husband

"Vivienne... Viv, baby, look at me."
Daniel was on his knees.
The man who had stood by with his hands in his pockets while his mother shredded my clothing was now crawling across the marble floor toward me. He didn't care about the wine spills. He didn't care that his custom suit trousers were soaking up the shattered champagne from the floor.
He reached out, his hands trembling violently, trying to grasp the hem of the cashmere coat wrapped around me.
"Get away from her," Marcus Sterling ordered, stepping forward.
"No, let him speak," I said quietly, stopping Marcus with a slight raise of my hand.
Daniel looked up at me, tears streaming down his face, snot running over his lip. "Vivienne, I swear to God... I swear on our unborn child, I didn't know! I didn't know what Chloe and my mother were doing! You have to believe me! I thought... I thought Chloe had just lost her head because of wedding stress! I was just trying to keep the peace!"
"Keep the peace?" I repeated the words slowly, tasting the bitter ash in every syllable. "By handing her my purse? By watching your mother step on the dress my father had tailored for me? By watching them treat me like an animal?"
"I was stupid! I was a coward!" Daniel sobbed, clutching his hands together in a prayer-like gesture. "I’m sorry, Viv! Please, forgive me. Think of our baby! We’re a family! We’re going to raise our daughter together! I’ll cut them off! I’ll never speak to my mother again! I’ll never see Chloe again! Just tell Mr. Sterling to open the doors. Let’s go home. Let’s go back to our apartment and talk this through."
"Our apartment?" A cold, humorless laugh escaped my throat. "You mean the apartment whose rent has been paid directly by a Vance subsidiary trust for the last two years? You thought your promotion to vice president at your firm was because of your brilliant marketing strategies, Daniel?"
Daniel froze, his tear-streaked face going completely blank. "What... what do you mean?"
Marcus Sterling stepped forward, holding a tablet. "Mr. Whitmore, your mid-level marketing firm, Apex Creative, was acquired by Vance Capital eighteen months ago through a shell holding company. Your salary, your annual bonuses, and your company car were approved directly by Miss Vance. You have never earned a single cent that didn't originate from the very woman you allowed your family to call a parasite."
Gasps rippled through the guests who remained in the room.
Daniel looked up at me as if seeing a ghost. His entire perception of reality, his ego, his masculinity—the very foundation of his pride—crumbled into dust right before his eyes.
"You... you bought my company?" he whispered.
"I didn't buy it to control you, Daniel," I said softly, the pain in my chest constricting my breathing. "I bought it because you came home crying two years ago, terrified that the company was going under and that you wouldn't be able to provide for our future. I saved your career because I loved you. I wanted you to feel proud. I wanted you to walk tall."
I pulled the coat tighter around my belly as a sharp, sudden cramp flared in my lower abdomen. I winced, sucking in a harsh breath.
"Vivienne?" Daniel reached out frantically. "Are you okay? What’s wrong?"
"Don't touch me," I gasped, holding my side.
Before Daniel could stand, the massive ballroom doors didn't just unlock—they swung open with a resounding, thunderous crash that silenced every cry, every sob, and every whisper in the room.
The security guards snapped to absolute attention, their hands folded behind their backs, their chins raised high.
Walking through the threshold was a man whose presence sucked all the remaining oxygen out of the ballroom.

Arthur Vance had arrived.
