Chapter 4 - The Projection of Guilt

The footage on the screens was razor-sharp, captured by the Vance Continental Hotel’s discreet 4K ceiling security domes.
The time stamp in the bottom right corner read: *5:42 PM*—less than forty-five minutes earlier, right before the ceremony concluded.
The screen showed the plush interior of the Bridal Suite. Chloe was standing in front of the vanity mirror, her wedding dress fully fastened. But she wasn't crying tears of joy. She was smirking, holding up a sparkling, antique diamond ring between her thumb and forefinger.
Standing beside her was Eleanor.
The ballroom gasped in collective horror.
On the screen, Eleanor was holding open my spare garment bag—the one containing the flat sandals I had planned to change into later in the evening to relieve my swollen, pregnant feet.
*"Are you sure about this, Mom?"* Chloe’s voice boomed through the ballroom speakers, crisp and undeniable. *"What if Daniel takes her side?"*
Eleanor’s recorded laughter was cold enough to freeze blood. *"Daniel? Please. Daniel does whatever I tell him to do. He’s terrified of being cut out of the family trust. Once we find the ring in her bag in front of Julian’s parents, Daniel will have no choice but to divorce her. A Whitmore man cannot be married to a convicted felon. We’ll take the baby, declare Vivienne unfit, and raise the child properly without that parasite around to leech off our social standing."*
On the screen, Eleanor watched with satisfaction as Chloe slipped the five-carat diamond ring into the interior zipper pocket of my spare bag. Chloe then zipped it shut, laughed, and applied a fresh coat of red lipstick.
*"To a clean break,"* Chloe toasted on video, clinking her champagne flute against Eleanor’s.
In the ballroom, you could hear a pin drop on the carpet.
The two hundred guests—society columnists, Julian’s aristocratic relatives, Whitmore business partners, and old family friends—stood frozen in absolute, paralyzed mortification.
Chloe’s face turned an ungodly shade of grey. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish suffocating on dry land. "Turn it off..." she whimpered, her hands flying to her face. "Turn it off! That’s fake! That’s AI! Someone hacked the screens!"
Eleanor looked as though she had been struck by lightning. She staggered backward, her hand blindly searching for a chair to support her weight, but her socialite friends instantly cleared the space around her, recoiling as if she were infected with the plague.
"AI?" Marcus Sterling’s voice sliced through the silence. "That is the proprietary closed-circuit feed of the Presidential Suite corridor, hard-encrypted and directly routed to Vance Security Central. It cannot be altered. It cannot be hacked."
I took a slow, heavy step toward Eleanor.
The cashmere coat fluttered open slightly, revealing the jagged, torn edge of my dress—the dress she had purposely shredded to humiliate me while accusing me of a crime she herself had orchestrated.
"You wanted to take my daughter?" I whispered, my voice shaking with a rage so profound it felt like an earthquake in my bones. "You wanted to frame me, put me in prison, and steal my child?"
"Vivienne..." Eleanor gasped, clutching her throat, her aristocratic facade peeling away to reveal pure, unadulterated panic. "Vivienne, darling... it was a joke! A test! We just wanted to make sure... we wanted to protect the family name..."
"Don't call her darling!"
The voice that cut through the room didn't belong to me, nor did it belong to Daniel.
It was Julian Bradley.
Chloe’s brand-new husband tore his boutonnière from his lapel and hurled it violently onto the floor at Chloe’s feet.
"Julian?" Chloe sobbed, reaching out for him with trembling, manicured hands. "Baby, please, let me explain! My mother pushed me into it! She said—"
"Don't touch me, you psychopathic fraud!" Julian barked, stepping so far back he collided with the wedding cake table, rattling the crystal flutes. "My father warned me about your family! He told me Whitmore Industries was drowning in debt, but I was stupid enough to think you actually loved me! You’re a monster! You tried to frame a heavily pregnant woman at your own wedding?!"
Julian turned on his heel, looking at his parents, who were standing near the doors with expressions of pure disgust.
"Dad! Call the family lawyers right now," Julian yelled across the ballroom. "We’re filing for an immediate annulment. We haven't even signed the marriage registry with the clerk yet. This wedding is dead."
"No! Julian, no!" Chloe shrieked, collapsing to her knees in her voluminous white gown, sobbing hysterically as her groom walked toward the exit doors without looking back once.

And that was when Daniel finally broke.
