Chapter 5 - The Knock on the Door

Chloe and her new husband, Austin, had rented a luxurious modern penthouse overlooking the harbor while their newly purchased suburban home was being renovated.
At 11:15 AM on Tuesday morning, three days after the wedding, Chloe was standing in her kitchen wearing a silk robe, sipping an iced latte, admiring the diamond band glittering on her left ring finger.
The heavy, rhythmic knock on the heavy oak door startled her.
"Austin?" she called out toward the bedroom. "Are you expecting room service?"
"No," Austin called back, walking into the living room while buttoning a polo shirt. "I'll get it."
Austin pulled the front door open. Standing in the carpeted hallway were Detectives Miller and Reyes, flanked by two uniformed patrol officers.
Austin blinked in confusion. "Can I help you?"
"Austin Vance?" Detective Miller asked.
"Yes. What's this about?"
Chloe strolled into the foyer, holding her coffee cup with an amused, slightly annoyed expression. "Officers, if this is about the noise complaint from our after-party on Saturday, that's completely ridiculous. We paid the venue's cleaning fee—"
"Chloe Linley Vance," Detective Reyes said, stepping past Austin into the foyer and producing an arrest warrant. "Put the cup down and place your hands behind your back."
Chloe’s laugh was sharp, condescending, and brittle. "Excuse me? Are you insane? Austin, tell them who your father is! What is this, a joke? Maya put you up to this, didn't she? That dramatic little brat—"
"You are under arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, mayhem, and felony battery resulting in serious bodily injury," Detective Reyes announced, grabbing Chloe’s wrist and snapping a cold steel handcuff around it.
"Hey! Back off! Get your hands off my wife!" Austin shouted, stepping forward aggressively, but the two uniformed officers immediately moved in between him and Chloe.
"Mr. Vance, take a step back," the lead officer warned. "Do not interfere with an active arrest."
"Austin! Do something!" Chloe shrieked, struggling violently against the handcuffs as Reyes secured her other arm behind her back. "They're arresting me because of a stupid wedding prank! Maya scratched her face because she threw a tantrum!"
"Your sister didn't scratch her face, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said, pulling out a search warrant from his inner jacket pocket and holding it up to Austin’s face. "The doctors pulled three utility razor blades and twelve shards of broken fiberglass out of her left cheek. And we have the paperwork you signed at *Sweet Elegance Confections* proving you hand-delivered that exact tier to the bakery."
Austin stopped dead. The color completely drained from his face. He stared at his new wife, his eyes wide with absolute horror.
"Chloe..." Austin breathed, his voice barely audible. "What did you do?"
"He's lying! Austin, they're lying! Maya set me up!" Chloe screamed, her face contorting into an ugly, furious mask as the officers dragged her toward the elevator. "Austin! Call your father's lawyers! Austin!"

Austin didn't move. He stood frozen in the open doorway, staring at the empty space where his wife had stood, the illusion of his perfect marriage shattering into a thousand jagged pieces.
