Chapter 4 - The Bakery's Testimony

At 8:30 the next morning, Detectives Miller and Reyes walked through the front doors of *Sweet Elegance Confections*, the premier artisanal bakery in downtown Oakridge.
The shop smelled of caramelized sugar, warm vanilla, and melted chocolate. Behind the marble counter stood the owner, a middle-aged woman named Elena Rossi, wiping down an espresso machine.
"Can I help you?" Elena asked with a bright customer-service smile, before noticing the badges hanging from their belts. Her smile vanished. "Is something wrong?"
"Ms. Rossi, we’re investigating an incident that occurred last night at the Vance wedding at the Grandview Manor," Detective Miller said, pulling out his notebook. "You provided the wedding cake."
Elena’s face drained of color. "Oh, God. Did someone get food poisoning? We follow every health code to the letter—"
"No, Ms. Rossi," Detective Reyes interrupted. "A guest was severely injured by foreign objects embedded inside the bottom tier."
Elena frowned, shaking her head vigorously. "That's impossible. Absolutely impossible. We didn't even bake the bottom tier."
The detectives froze. Miller clicked his pen. "Explain that, please."
"The bride—Chloe Linley—she insisted on providing her own bottom tier," Elena explained, her voice rising in anxious defense. "She came in two weeks ago with a dummy tier she claimed she made herself in a specialty culinary class. She said it was a family tradition—some sentimental recipe passed down from her grandmother that she wanted incorporated into the design, but she wanted our decorators to frost it so it matched our top two tiers."
"Did you inspect it before frosting it?" Reyes asked sharply.
"We told her we couldn't vouch for it, and we made her sign a strict liability waiver!" Elena said, hurrying behind the counter and opening a metal filing cabinet. She pulled out a manila folder and slammed it onto the counter. "Here. Look. She signed it right there. She specifically instructed us that the bottom tier was *never* to be served to the guests. She told us it was purely for the cake-cutting photo opportunity."
Miller leaned over the contract. There, in Chloe's distinct, loopy cursive, was the signature: *Chloe Linley*.
Attached to the paperwork was a special instruction note written on floral stationery:
*“Please apply the heavy red-velvet buttercream over the entire base tier. Do not cut or distribute this tier under any circumstances. My sister and I have a private surprise planned with it during the reception.”*
Detective Reyes looked at her partner, her jaw set hard.
"A private surprise," Reyes murmured. "She pre-ordered the weapon two weeks in advance."
Elena Rossi covered her mouth in horror. "What happened? Who got hurt?"

"Her sister," Detective Miller said quietly, closing his notebook. "And it's about time we paid the bride a visit."
