Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The Westchester County Courthouse was bustling with morning traffic when Eleanor and Rachel Vance stormed through the security checkpoints.

Eleanor was wearing a wrinkled coat she had slept in at the motel, her makeup smeared, her eyes bloodshot with manic fury. Rachel trailed behind her, carrying an oversized designer purse stuffed with unpaid bills, her face pale and hollow.

"I need to speak to Judge Harrison immediately!" Eleanor barked at the court clerk behind the bulletproof glass. "I am Eleanor Vance! My property has been unlawfully seized by an impostor posing as my deceased husband’s attorney!"

"Mrs. Vance?" a calm, deep voice inquired from behind her.

Eleanor turned, expecting to see a sympathetic court administrator.

Instead, she was met by six uniformed New York State Police troopers, accompanied by two sharp-suited investigators from the Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division.

"Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest," Senior Investigator Davis announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"What?!" Eleanor shrieked, backing away until she hit the marble counter. "Are you insane? I am the victim here! My home was invaded!"

"You are being charged with sixteen counts of grand larceny in the first degree, eleven counts of forgery, seven counts of identity theft, and criminal conspiracy to commit probate fraud," Investigator Davis recited calmly. "Additionally, Rachel Vance, you are under arrest for felony assault in the second degree, reckless endangerment, and criminal facilitation."

Rachel shrieked like a wounded animal. "Assault?! I didn't assault anyone! It was just a cup of coffee! She’s my sister!"

"That 'cup of coffee' caused second-degree burns to a seven-month pregnant woman, Ms. Vance," the investigator replied coldly. "And we have high-resolution 4K video footage of you throwing it directly at her face, followed by your mother physically shoving her to the ground. That constitutes felony assault of an expectant mother under New York state law."

"No! No! You can't do this to me!" Rachel screamed as a female trooper grabbed her wrists, pulling them behind her back. The sharp, metallic *click* of the handcuffs locking around Rachel’s wrists echoed across the marble rotunda. "Mom! Do something! Call Julian! Call someone!"

"Julian Davies has already provided a sworn deposition detailing your attempts to solicit money under false pretenses," Investigator Davis added ruthlessly. "He has fully cooperated with the state."

Eleanor lunged forward, her nails clawing at the air toward the officers. "Thomas is dead! He’s dead! You can't convict me of stealing from a dead man!"

A side door to the rotunda opened.

Arthur Sterling stepped out, holding a tablet computer. He walked directly up to Eleanor, holding the screen inches from her face.

On the screen was a live video feed from the Maine estate.

Thomas Vance sat tall and proud in his study, wearing a clean suit, looking directly into the camera lens with absolute, unshakable authority. Beside him sat me, my hand resting comfortably in his, wrapped in warmth, safety, and undeniable peace.

"Hello, Eleanor," Thomas’s voice spoke through the tablet speakers, clear, resonant, and cold as winter ice. "You told the world I was dead. But as you can see... I have outlived your empire."

Eleanor stared at the screen, her mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled from the water. The last remnants of her arrogance, her pride, and her sanity seemed to shatter entirely.

Her knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the cold marble floor of the courthouse, weeping incoherent, broken curses as the state troopers pulled her arms behind her and snapped the steel cuffs shut.

A crowd of reporters, tipped off by Arthur’s office hours earlier, burst through the revolving doors, camera flashes illuminating Eleanor’s pathetic, disgraced face for every newspaper in the country to see.
