Chapter 7 - The Voice on the Porch

My hands trembled so hard I could barely undo my seatbelt. Arthur reached over, gently unbuckling it for me, and opened the van door.

The cold ocean wind swept over me, carrying the sharp, clean scent of the sea. I stepped down onto the gravel, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Fifteen years of grief, fifteen years of feeling unwanted, fifteen years of Eleanor’s poisonous lies—all of it seemed to evaporate into the coastal air as I looked at the man on the porch.

Thomas Vance looked fragile, yes. His left hand rested quietly in his lap, the lingering effect of his recent stroke. But when he looked at me, his green eyes were blazing with an intensity of love that shattered every defense I had spent my life building.

"Elena," he croaked. The voice was raspy, strained from the stroke, but the cadence was the exact same voice that used to sing me lullabies when I had fevers as a little girl.

"Dad?" I whispered.

I didn't care about the pain in my bruised hip. I didn't care about the doctor's orders to rest. I walked up the stone steps as fast as my trembling legs could carry me, falling to my knees right beside his wheelchair.

Thomas reached out with his good right arm, pulling me against his chest with a strength that defied his frail frame.

"My little girl," he wept, his tears falling into my hair. "My sweet, brave little girl... forgive me. Please, God, forgive me for leaving you in the dark."

I buried my face into his shoulder, smelling the familiar scent of sandalwood soap and pipe tobacco that I had thought was lost to history. I broke down completely, sobbing with a depth of sorrow and joy that cleansed every wound my mother and sister had ever carved into my soul.

"I thought you were dead," I cried, clutching his wool sweater. "They told me you hated me. They told me you ran away because of me!"

"No! Never!" Thomas’s voice rose with sudden, fierce clarity. He framed my face with his rough, warm hands, forcing me to look into his eyes. "You were my light, Elena. Every single day I spent in hiding, every dollar I earned, every breath I took was for you. When Eleanor threatened to take you... when she threatened to hurt you... I had to disappear until I was strong enough to destroy her without her ever being able to touch you."

He gently placed his warm hand over my rounded belly.

A soft, miraculous kick fluttered beneath his palm. Thomas gasped, his face lighting up with pure, unadulterated wonder.

"She’s strong," Thomas whispered, a radiant smile breaking through his tears. "Just like her mother."

"Her name is going to be Maya," I said, smiling through my tears. "Maya Thomas Vance."

Thomas closed his eyes, a deep, shuddering breath passing through him as if a boulder had finally been lifted from his chest. "Maya. A beautiful name. A clean name. A name that will never know the shadows of Bedford."

He looked up at Arthur, who stood at the base of the steps, watching the reunion with quiet satisfaction.

"Arthur," Thomas said, his voice steadying into the tone of a master commander reclaiming his ship. "Is the trap sprung?"

"It is, Thomas," Arthur replied with a curt nod. "Eleanor and Rachel are currently at the county courthouse attempting to file an emergency stay. The district attorney is waiting for them in the rotunda with the arrest warrants."

Thomas looked down at me, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. "Then let us watch the ending together, my dear. Inside, where it is warm."
