Chapter 8 - Kitchen Fire

The morning sun was brutally bright as Elena’s Mercedes pulled onto the quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac where Tessa rented a sprawling four-bedroom house with two other twenty-something socialites.
Parked in the driveway was a white Mercedes Sprinter van, already wrapped in fresh vinyl lettering: *Vance Hearth & Table - Artisanal Comfort Delivered.*
Beside the van, two men in high-visibility vests were unloading commercial Cambro food warmers. Through the open double doors of the garage, I could see stainless steel prep tables, three heavy-duty propane burners hooked up to oversized tanks, and boxes of wholesale packaging stacked to the ceiling.
Standing in the center of the garage was Tessa, dressed in an immaculate linen apron over designer jeans, clutching an iced latte while barking orders at two exhausted-looking culinary students.
"No, you idiot!" Tessa yelled at a young woman who looked barely nineteen. "The microgreens go on the *side* of the beef! If you put them on top, they wilt under the heat lamps! Do I have to do everything myself?!"
"She doesn't even know how to hold a pairing knife," I muttered from the passenger seat.
"Stay in the car until I tell you to move," Elena instructed. "Keep your phone recording through the tinted window."
Elena stepped out of the vehicle, followed immediately by an unassuming man in a gray suit who had pulled up behind us in an unmarked sedan. His name was Inspector Donald Ray from the County Environmental Health and Food Safety Division.
Elena and Inspector Ray walked up the driveway with the calm, terrifying confidence of people carrying state-sanctioned destruction in their briefcases.
"Excuse me!" Tessa called out, waving her hand dismissively as they approached. "We are in the middle of production for a corporate launch! If you're here to pitch marketing services, leave a card in the mailbox!"
Inspector Ray pulled a gold-and-blue badge from his breast pocket and flipped it open.
"Tessa Vance?"
Tessa paused, her iced latte lowering from her lips. "Yes?"
"I’m Inspector Ray with the County Health Department. I have a formal complaint regarding an unpermitted commercial food production facility operating within a residential zone, illegal use of commercial propane equipment in an attached structure, and distribution of uninspected meat products."
Tessa’s face went chalk white. "What? This... this is a private tasting! We’re just preparing food for family!"
"Really?" Elena Vance stepped forward, holding up a printout of Tessa's social media page. "Because your public post forty-five minutes ago stated you were delivering forty-two executive corporate lunch boxes to three different downtown office towers for sixty-five dollars a plate. That constitutes commercial food manufacturing under state statute 114."
"Who the hell are you?!" Tessa snapped, her voice spiking in panic.
"I’m Elena Vance. I represent Nora Vance."
At the sound of my name, the two culinary students immediately stopped plating, exchanged terrified glances, and took off their aprons.
"Hey! What are you doing?!" Tessa screamed at them. "Get back to work! I'm paying you under the table for this!"
"And that’s an unregistered labor violation," Elena added pleasantly, taking out a small notebook. "Keep talking, Ms. Vance. You're adding zeroes to your legal defense fund by the second."
"Get off my property!" Tessa shrieked, her eyes darting frantically toward the street. "Ethan! Where is Ethan?!"
"Ethan is currently at his law firm being served with a temporary restraining order and a federal subpoena for bank records," Elena said coolly. "Inspector Ray, would you like to inspect the refrigeration units?"
"Indeed," Ray said, already stepping past Tessa into the garage. He pulled out a digital infrared thermometer.
Within three minutes, the situation turned from a regulatory disaster into a catastrophic crime scene.
"These short ribs," Ray said, pointing the laser at a pan of beef sitting on the counter. "Internal temperature is seventy-two degrees. How long have they been sitting out?"
Tessa opened and closed her mouth like a suffocating fish. "They... they were in my trunk overnight. But they were covered!"
"In your trunk?" Ray looked at her with pure disgust. "In eighty-degree ambient heat? You’re serving twelve-hour temperature-abused beef to corporate clients? This is a level-four biohazard. If anyone ate this, they’d be in the intensive care unit with salmonella or botulism within twelve hours."
Ray pulled out a bright neon-orange sticker the size of a dinner plate.
He walked over to the front door of the garage and slapped it directly across the glass.
*ORDER TO CEASE AND DESIST - UNLAWFUL FOOD PRODUCTION FACILITY - IMMEDIATE CLOSURE.*
"If one piece of food leaves this garage," Ray said, "the sheriff's department will be here within ten minutes to confiscate the entire vehicle and place you under arrest for reckless endangerment."
Tessa dropped her iced latte. The plastic cup burst on the concrete floor, splashing milky brown liquid over her white designer sneakers.
She looked toward Elena’s car. Her eyes locked directly onto mine through the tinted glass.
The rage in her face was monstrous. She lunged toward the car, but Elena stepped squarely into her path.
May you like
"Take one more step toward that vehicle, Tessa, and I will have you booked for violating a protective order as an agent of your brother," Elena said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "Your business is dead. Your reputation is ruined. And when the health department issues its public press release this afternoon regarding the tainted meat you were about to feed to seventy corporate executives downtown, your little TikTok video is going to age like raw milk."
