Chapter 7 - The Smear Campaign

By 9:30 AM, Elena Vance’s corner office on the forty-second floor smelled like dark roast coffee and impending doom for the Vance family.

Elena was a woman in her late forties, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit with hair cut into a severe, architectural bob. She hadn't looked up from her tablet for twenty minutes as she clicked through the digital paper trail I had provided.

"The forgery is amateurish," Elena said finally, tossing the tablet onto her glass conference table. "Ethan used an electronic stylus on the title agency's remote portal, but the IP address traces directly to his work terminal at his firm. He committed federal bank fraud from his corporate desk. The man is an arrogant idiot."

"What happens next?" I asked, my hands clasped tightly around a paper coffee cup.

"First, the immediate relief," Elena said, pulling out a fresh manila folder. "Judge Martinez granted our emergency temporary restraining order thirty minutes ago based on the domestic battery report and the clear pattern of financial retaliation. Ethan has until five o'clock today to collect his personal clothing under police supervision and vacate the house. Diane is barred from coming within five hundred feet of you, your workplace, or the marital residence."

A wave of relief washed over me, but it was quickly cut short by Elena's next words.

"However, the sister is on the warpath."

Elena spun her laptop around, facing the screen toward me.

My stomach dropped.

Tessa hadn't backed down after my phone call. Instead, she had gone nuclear on social media.

She had posted a video across TikTok, Instagram, and local community Facebook groups that had already racked up over eighty thousand views.

In the clip, Tessa sat in her gleaming white SUV, dabbing fake tears from her mascara-stained eyes.

*"Hey everyone... I am completely heartbroken to have to make this video,"* Tessa sobbed convincingly to the camera. *"Our startup, Vance Hearth & Table, was meant to be a celebration of local food and family love. But this morning, my brother’s wife, Nora Vance, walked out on our family, stole thousands of dollars in business funds, and threw away dozens of prepared meals meant for a local children's shelter because she didn't get her way. She is actively trying to sabotage our small, female-owned business out of pure jealousy. Please, if you support women in business, do not believe her lies. We are trying our best to honor our commitments despite her cruelty."*

The comments below the video were a cesspool of vitriol.

*@ChefMama99: What a disgusting woman! Who throws away food meant for a shelter?! Cancel her!*

*@SuburbanMomLife: Isn't she trying to work at L'Orangerie? Chef Marisol Vega needs to know what kind of monster she’s hiring!*

*@LocalFoodie_B: Boycott L'Orangerie if they hire this sociopath! Justice for Tessa!*

"They're tagging Marisol," I whispered, the paper coffee cup crushing in my grip. "They're trying to force Marisol to drop me."

"Of course they are," Elena said calmly. "It’s the standard playbook for entitled narcissists when the legal reality hits them. They can’t win in a courtroom, so they run to the court of public opinion to destroy your reputation before you can testify."

"I have to respond," I said, standing up. "I have to post the truth—"

"You will do no such thing," Elena commanded, her voice cutting through my panic like a scalpel. "You do not roll in the mud with pigs, Nora. You let the pigs build their own slaughterhouse."

"Elena, Marisol gave me until tomorrow morning to handle this! If this PR nightmare blows up her soft opening, she will fire me before I even clock in!"

Elena checked her watch. "Then we don't respond on social media. We respond with the law. Come with me."

"Where are we going?"

May you like

"To the Department of Public Health," Elena said, grabbing her briefcase. "And then to Tessa's garage."
