Chapter 7 - Turning the Tables

By ten o’clock the following morning, the trap was set.
Eleanor Vance had spent the night coordinating with the Hartford District Attorney’s Special Financial Crimes Division and the State Family Court. Armed with Chloe’s thumb drive, the forensic bank audits, and the certified medical records, the legal machinery moved with devastating, silent precision.
"We don't just file an answer to Evelyn’s smear campaign," Eleanor instructed me over a secure conference call. "We strike simultaneously on three fronts: criminal, civil, and public. Narcissists like Evelyn Sterling don't fear the law; they fear irrelevance and public humiliation. We will take away their shield first."
At noon, Maya launched the counter-offensive.
We didn't write an emotional, defensive post. We didn't beg for sympathy.
From a newly created public advocacy account, Maya uploaded a high-definition video file obtained directly from the Riverview Country Club’s ceiling security cameras—subpoenaed by Eleanor’s office two hours prior.
The footage was crystal clear. It showed the entire sequence in high-definition: Evelyn grabbing the cake with both hands, lunging with terrifying malice, and violently smashing it into the face of a pregnant woman sitting defenselessly at the table. It showed Daniel standing by with cold indifference. And it was synchronized with the pristine audio captured by the videographer’s lapel microphone—Evelyn’s shrill, hateful scream: *"My son deserved a boy! This family needed a grandson! Leave!"*
Directly beneath the video, Eleanor’s firm posted a brief, clinical press release:
> *"On behalf of Mrs. Clara Sterling, we have initiated formal criminal proceedings regarding the aggravated battery committed against our client at the Riverview Country Club on November 12th. Furthermore, formal criminal complaints regarding bank fraud, grand larceny, and corporate forgery involving the unauthorized encumbrance of marital assets have been submitted to the Office of the State Attorney. Mrs. Sterling thanks the community for their concern and asks for privacy as she prepares for the birth of her daughter."*
The internet did what the internet does best: it detonated.
Within ninety minutes, the video had amassed over two million views. By two in the afternoon, it was trending nationally under the hashtags `#BoyMomHorror`, `#JusticeForClara`, and `#TheSterlingScandal`.
The local news stations picked up the story for their afternoon broadcasts. Evelyn’s pristine, philanthropic facade was obliterated in an instant. The prestigious Board of Governors for the Children’s Memorial Hospital—where Evelyn served as Vice Chair—issued an emergency statement announcing her immediate, permanent expulsion from all committees.
At 3:15 PM, Daniel’s investment firm released a public memo: Daniel Sterling had been placed on indefinite, unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of a state criminal investigation into felony forgery.
Sitting in Eleanor’s reception area, I watched the notifications roll across Maya’s tablet like an avalanche.
"They're calling it the 'Frosting Battery,'" Maya said, a fierce, vindictive laugh escaping her throat. "Look at the comments. Evelyn’s country club has already disabled their reviews because thousands of people are demanding her membership be revoked."
My phone buzzed. It was an unknown number, but the area code was local.
"Put it on speaker," Eleanor said, walking out of her inner office holding a freshly stamped stack of blue-backed legal documents.
I tapped the screen and pressed speaker.
*"Clara! Clara, you psychotic witch!"* Evelyn’s voice shrieked through the tiny speaker, sounding completely unhinged. The manicured, aristocratic matriarch was gone; in her place was a cornered animal screaming into the void. *"What have you done?! The news trucks are parked at the end of my driveway! The club president just called to tell me I am barred from the premises! Call your lawyer and retract that video this instant!"*
"I can't do that, Evelyn," I said calmly, looking at the city skyline outside. "The truth has a funny way of coming out, doesn't it?"
*"You think you’ve won?!"* Evelyn roared, her voice breaking into hoarse ragged gasps. *"You have nothing! Daniel will never sign a divorce! He will tie you up in court until that bastard child is an adult! We will bleed you dry!"*
Eleanor leaned down toward the phone, her voice cold as ice. "Mrs. Evelyn Sterling, this is Eleanor Vance, chief counsel for Mrs. Clara Sterling. I advise you to cease this phone call immediately. This line is being recorded under a court-authorized evidentiary order. Furthermore, I suggest you retain a criminal defense attorney immediately, as two detectives from the Major Financial Crimes Unit are currently en route to your residence with an arrest warrant for criminal conspiracy to commit bank fraud."
A sharp, suffocating silence fell over the line.
Then, a faint, horrified gasp from Evelyn—followed by the frantic click of the call disconnecting.
"Checkmate on the mother," Eleanor said smoothly, checking her gold wristwatch. "Now, Clara, it is time for your afternoon appointment at Dr. Harrison’s clinic. Daniel knows you have this checkup today; it was on the shared digital calendar before you severed access."
I looked up at Eleanor, a sudden flicker of anxiety fluttering in my chest. "You think he’ll try to contact me there?"
May you like
Eleanor smiled—a cold, razor-sharp smile that promised absolute ruin for anyone who crossed her. "I am counting on it. Detective Miller and two undercover officers are already stationed in the clinic lobby. Let Daniel Sterling make his final mistake."
