Chapter 6 - The Sister-in-Law’s Confession

That evening, the rain stopped, leaving behind a thick, creeping fog that swallowed the streetlights of Westbridge.

Maya and I were sitting at her dining table, drafting a comprehensive inventory of my personal assets, when a sharp, timid knock sounded at the front door.

Maya immediately reached for the pepper spray she kept in the entryway drawer. "If that’s Daniel again, I'm calling the state troopers."

"Look through the window first," I said, standing up and placing a protective hand over my stomach.

Maya peered through the blinds, then let out a low gasp. "Clara... you need to see this."

I walked to the window and pulled back the wooden slat.

Standing on the porch was not Daniel, nor was it Evelyn. It was Chloe.

Daniel’s twenty-four-year-old sister stood shivering in an oversized puffer jacket, her hair soaked with mist, holding a heavy cardboard storage box in her arms. She looked like a frightened rabbit, glancing over her shoulder at the dark street every two seconds.

I unlatched the deadbolt and pulled the door open.

"Chloe?"

The moment Chloe saw my face, her lower lip trembled, and she burst into quiet, desperate sobs.

"Clara... please," Chloe choked out, her teeth chattering from the cold. "Please don't shut the door. I ran away. I took my car while Mom and Daniel were meeting with the bank’s crisis lawyers. I have something you need to see."

I looked at Maya, who nodded slowly. I stepped aside. "Come inside, Chloe. Quickly."

Chloe scurried in like a stray animal. Maya locked the deadbolt and led Chloe to the kitchen, handing her a warm mug of chamomile tea. The younger girl clutched the ceramic mug with trembling, red-knuckled hands, her tears dripping onto the rim.

"I’m so sorry, Clara," Chloe wept, her shoulders shaking. "I’m so, so sorry. Yesterday... at the party... I wanted to scream. I wanted to tackle Mom before she hit you with that cake. But I was so terrified. You don't know what she’s like behind closed doors. She’s controlled Daniel and me our entire lives. She controls our bank accounts, our trusts, our reputations... if we disobey her, she threatens to cut us off and leave us on the street."

"Chloe, take a breath," I said gently, sitting across from her. "Why are you here? What is in that box?"

Chloe wiped her nose with the sleeve of her jacket and pulled the cardboard box closer to the edge of the table.

"It started four months ago," Chloe whispered, her voice dropping as if Evelyn were lurking in the pantry. "When you first announced you were pregnant. Mom was obsessed. She told Daniel that this was their only chance to save the Sterling name from bankruptcy. But then... then Daniel found out through Dr. Harrison’s early blood panel that it was a girl."

"He told Evelyn immediately, didn't he?"

"Yes," Chloe said, nodding tearfully. "And Mom went insane. She broke every plate in the china cabinet. She told Daniel that he was a failure, that he was letting his father’s legacy die. And then... then Mom came up with the plan."

"The plan to push me out?"

"Worse, Clara," Chloe said, her voice shaking with genuine horror. "Mom contacted Vanessa."

The room went dead silent.

Vanessa Reed. Daniel’s ex-fiancée. The daughter of an old-money shipping magnate who had dumped Daniel five years ago when his family’s financial cracks first began to show.

"What does Vanessa have to do with this?" I asked, a cold knot tightening in the pit of my stomach.

"Vanessa is pregnant," Chloe revealed, dropping a bombshell that made the room tilt on its axis. "She’s three months along. And it’s Daniel’s."

Maya let out an audible gasp of pure revulsion. "You have got to be kidding me."

"He started seeing her again six months ago," Chloe confessed, burying her face in her hands. "Mom arranged it! Mom told Daniel that if Clara didn't produce a male heir, he needed a backup plan. Vanessa got an early amniocentesis test two weeks ago in Boston. It’s a boy, Clara. Vanessa is carrying a boy."

The air left my lungs. Every memory of the last six months flashed before my eyes—Daniel’s "late nights at the firm," the sudden business trips to Boston, his emotional detachment, his sudden coldness whenever he looked at my growing belly.

It wasn't just greed. It was a calculated, multi-layered conspiracy to replace me.

"The gender reveal party," I whispered, the puzzle pieces clicking into place with horrifying clarity. "The cake."

"Mom wanted to provoke you into a public fight," Chloe said, looking at me with pleading eyes. "She told Daniel that if she humiliated you publicly, you would leave in tears, file for divorce, and they could claim you abandoned the marriage while emotionally unstable. Then Daniel was going to bring Vanessa forward as the 'savior' of the family, marry her quietly, and present Vanessa’s son to the trust trustees before Daniel’s thirty-second birthday."

Chloe reached into the cardboard box and pulled out a sleek silver thumb drive and a stack of printed emails.

"I couldn't do it anymore, Clara," Chloe sobbed. "I listened to them in the library last night laughing about how easy it was going to be to crush you in court. Daniel was bragging about forging your signature on the bridge loan. Mom was practicing the weeping face she was going to make for the family court judge. It made me sick. I went into Daniel’s office, copied his entire email server, downloaded the security camera footage from the Oakridge house, and took the audio recordings."

"Audio recordings?" Maya leaned forward, her paralegal instincts firing on all cylinders.

"Mom has high-end dictation recorders in the library because she’s writing a memoir about the Sterling family," Chloe said, sliding the thumb drive across the table. "Every single meeting. The meeting where Mom told Daniel to falsify the loan documents. The phone call where Daniel told Vanessa that Clara was 'just an incubator who was about to be evicted.' It’s all on this drive."

I stared at the little piece of silver metal sitting on the pine table.

It was the smoking gun. It was the complete, undeniable destruction of Daniel and Evelyn Sterling.

I reached out and placed my hand over Chloe’s trembling fingers. "Chloe... do you realize what this means for you? If you give me this, your mother will disown you. Daniel will hate you forever."

Chloe looked up, fresh tears carving clean lines through the makeup on her cheeks, but for the first time, her jaw set into a firm, determined line that reminded me of my own resolve.

May you like

"My mother has been killing my soul since I was a child, Clara," Chloe said softly. "And Daniel became a monster the day he decided to become her puppet. I don't care about their money. I don't care about the Sterling name. I care about that baby girl. She deserves to grow up knowing that someone in this family wasn't rotten to the core."
