Chapter 9 - The Day in Court

Eight months later.

The high-ceilinged courtroom of Federal District Court 4 was packed to capacity.

Every bench was filled with reporters, sketch artists, city officials, and curious citizens who had followed every twist of the Parker-Cole trial. The press benches were overflowing, their laptops balanced on their knees, fingers poised above keyboards ready to send the breaking news alert to millions of readers across the country.

I sat at the prosecution’s table beside Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Chang and my brother Aiden.

I was wearing a tailored navy wool dress, my hair pulled back into an elegant chignon, wearing the simple pearl earrings my mother had left me. Beside me, in a baby carrier rested against the chair, eight-month-old Maya sat playing with a soft silver rattle Uncle Robert had given her for her half-birthday. She was healthy, bright-eyed, with chubby rosy cheeks and a quick, melodic laugh that lit up every room she entered.

Across the mahogany aisle sat Grant Parker.

He looked unrecognizable.

The man who had once spent two thousand dollars on Italian silk shirts and bragged about his personal fitness regimen was gone. Grant was hunched forward in an oversized dark blue prison jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to a chain around his waist. His hair had thinned dramatically, streaked with patches of gray, and his hollow cheeks were pale from eight months without natural sunlight.

He didn't look at the jury.

He didn't look at the judge.

Every few seconds, his bloodshot eyes darted toward me, then flicked down to Maya, filled with a sickening mixture of terror, regret, and naked desperation.

Behind him sat Vanessa Cole, wearing an orange correctional jumpsuit, her hands similarly shackled. Her expensive highlights had grown out, leaving her hair limp and dull. Her father was nowhere to be seen; Councilman Cole was currently serving an eighteen-month sentence at a minimum-security camp in Pennsylvania for campaign finance fraud.

Judge Harold Henderson adjusted his glasses and looked down from the bench.

"In the matter of *The United States versus Grant Tyler Parker and Vanessa Lynn Cole*," the judge read, his voice filling the cavernous room with solemn authority. "The jury has deliberated and returned a verdict on all counts."

The courtroom held its collective breath. The only sound was the faint clicking of the court reporter’s machine.

"On Count One: Conspiracy to Commit Interprovincial Kidnapping and Child Abduction," Judge Henderson read. "How say you?"

The jury foreperson, a stern-faced woman in her fifties, stood up.

"Guilty."

Grant’s shoulders collapsed inward as if he’d been struck by a falling timber. A soft, ragged gasp escaped his throat.

"On Count Two: Aggravated Battery Resulting in Emergency Medical Intervention on a Pregnant Person," the judge continued.

"Guilty as to both defendants."

Vanessa let out a sharp, choked sob, dropping her forehead against the polished defense table.

"On Count Three: Interstate Wire Fraud and Bank Embezzlement."

"Guilty."

"On Count Four: Forgery of Federal and State Power of Attorney Documents."

"Guilty."

"On Count Five: Obstruction of Justice and Tampering with Witness Testimony."

"Guilty."

Total, unconditional conviction across all seventeen counts of the federal indictment.

Judge Henderson set down the papers and looked over his glasses directly at the defense table.

"Mr. Parker," the judge said, his voice cold, devoid of the slightest ounce of leniency. "In my thirty-two years on the federal bench, I have rarely encountered a display of such callous, narcissistic cruelty as what was presented in this courtroom. The digital evidence from Camera 7, combined with the recovered international travel documents, leaves no doubt in this court’s mind that you viewed your wife not as a partner, but as an asset to be exploited, discarded, and terrorized."

Grant opened his dry mouth. "Your Honor... please... I was under immense financial pressure..."

"Silence, Mr. Parker," Judge Henderson cut him off with a crack of his gavel that made Grant flinch. "You stood by while your pregnant wife was physically assaulted outside the very delivery room where your child was fighting for life. You prioritized your vanity, your mistress, and your corrupt financial schemes over the life of an unborn infant."

The judge turned to Vanessa Cole.

"As to defendant Vanessa Cole: For your active role in the premeditated assault and your participation in the conspiracy to defraud and abduct an infant child, this court sentences you to nine years in federal custody at the Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville, followed by five years of supervised release."

Vanessa shrieked, burying her face in her cuffed hands as two federal marshals stepped forward to pull her from her chair.

Judge Henderson then looked down at Grant.

"As to defendant Grant Tyler Parker: For the crimes of aggravated battery, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, interstate wire fraud, and grand larceny, you are hereby sentenced to twenty-six years in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, with no possibility of parole. You will serve this sentence at the United States Penitentiary in Pollock."

Twenty-six years.

He would be sixty-one years old before he ever saw the outside of a maximum-security prison wall.

"Furthermore," Judge Henderson added, looking down at the civil termination decree on his desk. "This court hereby enters a permanent, irrevocable decree terminating all parental rights of Grant Tyler Parker over the minor child, Maya Vance. A lifetime protective order is granted. You are legally forbidden from ever contacting, approaching, or communicating with Emily Vance or Maya Vance, directly or through third parties, for the remainder of your natural life."

The gavel slammed down.

*Crack.*

"Court is adjourned."

The courtroom erupted into a frenzy of camera flashes, shouting reporters, and shifting benches.

The federal marshals grabbed Grant by his shoulders, hauling him to his feet.

As they turned him toward the holding cell door, Grant twisted his body, his eyes locking onto mine with one final, pathetic plea.

"Emily!" he screamed, his voice cracking against the marble walls. "Emily, look at me! I’m her father! Tell them I’m her father! Emily!"

I didn't blink.

I looked at him the same way one looks at a stranger on a subway platform—with mild, detached indifference.

Then, I looked down at Maya. She was smiling, reaching her little hands up toward my face, babbling a joyful, nonsensical string of baby words.

I leaned down and kissed her soft, fragrant forehead.

May you like

When I looked back up, the heavy steel door had slammed shut behind Grant Parker, locking him away into the oblivion he had built for himself.
