Chapter 7 - The Collapse of Vanessa Cole

By the fourth day, the hospital’s executive wing had become the command center for the total dismantling of Grant Parker’s world.
The media circus outside the main hospital gates was growing by the hour. Satellite trucks from every major network were lined up along the boulevard, their antennas pointed toward the sky, broadcasting live updates on what the press had dubbed *The Camera 7 Scandal.*
At 11:00 a.m., Aiden walked into my suite, carrying an iPad playing the live feed from the county courthouse.
"Councilman Cole just stepped up to the microphones," Aiden said, turning up the volume.
On the screen, a middle-aged man with sweat glistening on his forehead stood behind a forest of microphones. His expensive suit looked rumpled, his hair unkempt, and the trademark confident grin he used on campaign billboards was completely gone.
*“Ladies and gentlemen,”* Cole stammered, his hands visibly shaking against the wooden podium. *“Effective immediately, I am submitting my formal resignation from the City Council. I am also withdrawing my candidacy for the upcoming mayoral election. In light of the recent... allegations involving my daughter, Vanessa, I must focus entirely on my family’s legal defense.”*
A reporter shouted from the front row: *“Councilman! Did you accept three hundred thousand dollars in illicit campaign funds from Grant Parker in exchange for zoning variances in the industrial park?”*
Cole’s face drained of color. He didn't answer. He turned abruptly and shoved his way through the security doors as reporters hurled questions like stones at his back.
"The federal marshals served an asset forfeiture warrant on the Cole family estate thirty minutes ago," Aiden reported, leaning against the window frame. "Vanessa’s father used his personal campaign account to pay the property taxes on their summer house in Martha’s Vineyard. By tonight, every asset they own will be frozen."
A soft chime sounded on my tablet. It was an email notification from the State Department of Corrections.
An inmate communication request.
Inmate: *Vanessa Cole.*
Facility: *County Women’s Detention Center.*
Subject: *Emergency / Emily Please Read.*
Aiden leaned over my shoulder. "Don't open it. Let her rot."
"No," I said, clicking the link. "I want to see what she has to say."
The message appeared on the screen, written in ragged, frantic capital letters:
*EMILY. YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO ME. GRANT LIED TO ME ABOUT EVERYTHING. HE TOLD ME YOU WERE SEPARATED. HE TOLD ME THE BABY WASN'T HIS. HE TOLD ME YOU WERE AN ADDICT WHO WAS EXTORTING HIM FOR CHILD SUPPORT. HE PROMISED ME WE WERE GETTING MARRIED IN SEPTEMBER. HE GAVE ME HIS MOTHER’S HEIRLOOM ENGAGEMENT RING. I DIDN'T MEAN TO KICK YOU SO HARD. I WAS PANICKING BECAUSE HE TOLD ME YOU WERE GOING TO RUIN HIS CAREER. PLEASE TALK TO YOUR UNCLE. MY LAWYER SAYS THE CHARGES CARRY MANDATORY PRISON TIME. I AM ONLY TWENTY-SIX YEARS OLD. MY LIFE WILL BE OVER. PLEASE HAVE MERCY ON ME AS A WOMAN.*
I stared at the screen for a long, quiet moment.
There was no remorse in those words. No horror for what she had done to an unborn child. No empathy for the woman who had collapsed on the cold tile, gasping for breath while her blood pooled beneath her dress.
There was only the pathetic, sniveling terror of a spoiled predator who had finally run into an animal bigger than herself.
"Aiden," I said calmly.
"Yes, Emily?"
"Forward this message directly to Assistant DA Chang."
Aiden smiled. "Why? It doesn't contain any new evidence."
"Oh, yes, it does," I said, tapping the screen. "She admitted that the engagement ring Grant gave her belonged to his mother. That ring was purchased two months ago using a credit card issued under my personal LLC name. It’s evidence of continued interstate grand larceny. Let them add another count of receiving stolen property to her indictment."
Aiden let out a sharp, appreciative laugh. "You’re getting remarkably good at this, little sister."
"I learned from the best," I said, glancing over at Uncle Robert, who was sitting in the armchair reading an architectural journal, completely unbothered by the chaos unfolding beyond the glass.
Just then, my personal phone rang.
It was my private investigator, Thomas Burke, an ex-homicide detective Uncle Robert had put on retainer the night I was admitted.
"Ms. Vance," Burke’s gruff voice came through the line. "We just finished executing the search warrant on Grant’s private executive suite at the Parker Development headquarters."
"What did you find, Thomas?"
"Grant had a private safe hidden behind the mahogany paneling in his study," Burke said. "He thought only he had the combination. We had a safe technician crack it in twenty minutes."
"And?"
"Passports," Burke replied. "Three different fake identities. One for Grant, one for Vanessa, and a forged infant birth certificate with the name 'Chloe Parker.' He had twenty-five thousand dollars in foreign currency and one-way first-class tickets to Dubai booked for next Tuesday."
My heart stopped.
The room seemed to tilt on its axis.
"Tickets to Dubai?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.
Aiden and Uncle Robert snapped their heads toward me instantly.
"He wasn't just planning to take Maya’s custody," Burke said, his voice dropping into cold, lethal seriousness. "He knew the financial walls were closing in on him six months ago. Dubai has no extradition treaty with the United States for civil fraud or custody disputes. He was planning to abduct your newborn daughter straight from the maternity ward and vanish into the United Arab Emirates with Vanessa Cole."
The blood in my veins turned to liquid ice.
The kick outside the maternity wing hadn't been an accident of bad temper. It hadn't been a petty confrontation.
It was the opening move of a kidnapping.
Grant had orchestrated the entire scene to create enough chaos, medical distress, and emotional trauma to separate me from my child before I could ever leave the building.
Uncle Robert stood up from his chair.
His face was terrifyingly still. The kind of stillness that precedes an artillery barrage.
"Burke," Robert said, taking the phone from my trembling hand.
"Yes, Dr. Vance?"
"Take those passports, those tickets, and that forged birth certificate directly to the regional director of the FBI," Robert commanded, his voice shaking the foundations of the room. "Tell them Grant Parker is no longer a state fraud suspect. He is an international flight risk and an attempted child abductor. I want him transferred to the federal supermax detention unit in Otisville before sundown."
"On my way, sir."
Robert handed the phone back to Aiden, then walked over to the clear bassinet where Maya lay sleeping, completely undisturbed by the monsters who had plotted to steal her life.
Robert stroked her tiny, perfect cheek with the back of his thumb.

"Nobody," Robert whispered, his voice dark with a fury fifty years in the making, "touches my blood."
