Chapter 4 - The Delusion of the Petty

Daniel Mercer woke up at ten o'clock the following morning with a throbbing headache, a dry mouth, and a feeling of supreme satisfaction.
He rolled over, expecting Claire to be standing beside the bed with a tray of black coffee, two ibuprofen, and that nervous, apologetic look she usually wore after he reprimanded her.
The room was empty.
"Claire!" he yelled, his voice rough.
Silence answered him.
Frowning, he pulled on a silk bathrobe and padded down the hardwood hallway. "Claire, where the hell are you? Cooper’s supposed to have his soccer clinic at eleven!"
The living room was pristine, but chillingly still. In the kitchen, the remnants of yesterday’s party were gone, but the counter wasn't wiped down.
Then he saw it.
Sitting on the island was a single white envelope propped against Jessica’s red-stained wine glass. Next to it lay Claire’s modest gold wedding band.
Daniel scoffed, walking over and snatching up the envelope. "Dramatic little child," he muttered.
Inside the envelope was a short, handwritten note:
*The joke is over, Daniel. You will hear from my attorney.*
Daniel stared at the note, then burst into a loud, mocking laugh that echoed through the empty kitchen.
At that moment, the back patio door slid open. His mother, Linda, walked in carrying a basket of freshly picked garden herbs, her face glowing with morning energy.
"Good morning, sweetheart!" she chirped. "Is the little mouse still hiding upstairs? Honestly, Daniel, you should make her clean the patio furniture today. The guests left quite a mess."
"She’s gone, Mom," Daniel said, waving the slip of paper with a grin. "Took Cooper and ran. Left her ring on the counter."
Linda stopped dead, her eyes widening before a broad, triumphant smile spread across her face. "She left? Truly?"
"Look at this," Daniel chuckled, tossing the note onto the marble. "She says I’ll hear from her attorney. Can you believe the audacity? What attorney? She doesn't have two nickels to rub together! Her pathetic little catering savings account has barely four hundred dollars in it."
"Good riddance!" Linda declared, clapping her hands together. "She’s throwing a tantrum. Mark my words, Daniel, she’s probably sitting in some cheap motel down by the highway right now, waiting for you to call and beg her to come back. Don't you dare do it!"
"Beg her?" Daniel poured himself a glass of orange juice. "I’m changing the locks this afternoon. This is the best thing that could have happened. I don't have to deal with a messy separation. She abandoned the marital residence. Desertion, pure and simple."
The front door opened with a key, and Jessica Collins strolled in wearing tight athletic wear, a designer purse slung over her shoulder. She looked around, noticing the ring immediately.
"Tell me she didn't," Jessica gasped, clapping a manicured hand over her mouth.
"She did," Daniel said, wrapping an arm around Jessica’s waist and pulling her close. "The coast is clear, Jess. The house is ours."
"Oh, Daniel!" Jessica squealed, planting a loud kiss on his cheek. "Now you can focus entirely on the Bradford bid! Did you check your corporate email this morning?"
Daniel’s heart leapt. In the excitement, he had forgotten. He rushed to his briefcase, pulled out his tablet, and logged into his commercial sales portal.
There, sitting at the top of his inbox, was an email bearing the embossed golden crest of **Bradford Global Holdings & Enterprises**.
*Subject: Invitation to the Southeast Executive Franchise Gala - Grand Hermitage Hotel, Nashville.*
Daniel’s hands shook as he clicked open the email.
*Dear Mr. Mercer,*
*Based on your submitted portfolio and financial declarations for the Tennessee Luxury Automotive Expansion, the Bradford Executive Board requests your presence at the Private Regional Gala this Friday evening at eight o'clock. Formal attire required. Key executive announcements and franchise awards will be presented directly by the Chairman's Office.*
"Mom! Jess! Look at this!" Daniel roared, turning the screen toward them. "I got the invite! I got the damn invite!"
Linda covered her face, tears of vicarious vanity springing to her eyes. "My boy. My brilliant boy! I knew you were destined for greatness. A Bradford partnership! That’s fifty million dollars in capital backing!"
"We’re going to be royalty," Jessica purred, running her fingers down Daniel’s lapel. "I need a gown. The most expensive gown in Nashville. Daniel, we have to show these people that you already belong at their table."
"Take the company card," Daniel said recklessly, drunk on his own imagined triumph. "Spend whatever you want. We are celebrating tonight. Claire thought she was teaching me a lesson by running off with the boy? She just walked out on the biggest fortune in the South. She’s probably eating stale bread in a trailer park right now."
They raised their glasses of juice in a mocking toast to the woman they believed was completely broken.
May you like
They had no idea the trap had already closed around their necks.
