Chapter 15 - Echoes in the Dark

The crack of the gunshot reverberated through the ancient timber of the Bradford estate, a violent vibration that rattled my teeth and shook the floor beneath my boots.

Cooper bolted upright in bed, letting out a sharp, terrified whimper. "Mommy! Was that thunder?"

"Stay down, Cooper! Cover your ears and crawl into the closet, right now!" My voice was a knife edge, sharp enough to cut through his rising panic. I shoved him gently toward the wardrobe, watching his small silhouette disappear behind the heavy oak paneling before racking the slide of the nine-millimeter. The brass round chambered with a mechanical click that sounded deafening in the dead silence.

Beyond the door, Evelyn let out a low, breathless giggle that made my stomach heave. "Did you hear that, Claire? That was Carter's patience running out. Your father always thought he was a chess grandmaster, but he didn't realize when the board was kicked over, the pieces just break."

"Step away from the door, Evelyn," I said, keeping my voice dead-level as I leveled the sight directly at the brass lock. "Take one more breath toward this room, and I will put a bullet through the wood and straight into your throat."

A heavy sigh drifted through the keyhole. "Always so uncivilized, darling. You were born with a golden spoon, but you have the soul of an alley cat. That's why Carter never respected you. That's why he shoved your face into that vulgar cake on your son's birthday while I streamed your humiliation to half of Manhattan. You're pathetic."

Heavy footsteps approached behind her—deliberate, weighted with combat boots. Not Carter. A hired hand.

"Evelyn, clear the hall," a gruff voice barked.

I didn't wait. Remembering Frank's relentless tactical drills in the cellar, I didn't hide behind the door frame. I dropped to one knee, aligned my sights waist-high toward the door's center mass, and squeezed the trigger twice.

*BANG. BANG.*

Splinters erupted outward as two heavy slugs punched clean through the mahogany. A wet, strangled gasp followed instantly, accompanied by the thud of a heavy body collapsing against the opposite wall.

"Son of a bitch! She's armed!" a man cursed, his boots scrambling frantically on the hardwood.

"Get Carter! Blow the hinge!" Evelyn screamed, her mocking composure evaporating into raw hysteria.

I sprinted to the window, hit the override lever on the emergency steel shutters, and peered through the narrow four-inch ventilation slit. Outside, snow whipped horizontally through the towering pine trees, but down on the grand driveway, two blacked-out SUVs sat idling, their headlights killed. A red emergency flare burned near the gatehouse. Frank’s private security detail had been ambushed, but they weren't all dead—muzzle flashes blinked intermittently near the carriage house.

I couldn't stay pinned in this bedroom. If they brought breaching charges, Cooper and I would be trapped like rats in a cage.

I slipped to the closet, pulled Cooper out, and wrapped him in a heavy woolen coat. "Cooper, listen to me. We are going to play the silent ghost game. Not a word, not a peep, no matter what you see. Understand?"

His large blue eyes brimmed with tears, reflecting the cold moonlight filtering through the slit, but he nodded vigorously, clamping his lips tight.

I pulled the silver compass Dad had given me from my pocket. It wasn't just an heirloom. When you rotated the outer brass ring three times counterclockwise, the magnetic needle locked, and the hollow stem popped loose to reveal a high-frequency transponder and a four-digit override key for the estate’s hidden service passages—passages Carter had never known existed.

I pressed the key into the small brass escutcheon hidden behind the radiator. With a muted click, a narrow section of the wainscoting slid backward into the dark void of the walls.

"Down here," I whispered, guiding Cooper inside. "Hurry."

As I pulled the panel shut behind us, the bedroom door exploded inward behind an ear-splitting concussion blast.
