Chapter 7 - The VIP Gala Confrontation

The commencement ceremony concluded with the official hooding of the graduates. Clara stood on stage, receiving the doctoral hood of green and crimson, her eyes shining with quiet triumph as she hugged her mentors and colleagues.
Outside the auditorium, the rain had cleared, replaced by a radiant afternoon sun that bathed the university quad in golden light.
The elite post-graduation reception was held in the glass-walled Grand Atrium, accessible only to donors, department heads, and holders of the gold VIP pass.
Arthur, Vanessa, and Haley lingered by the dessert tables, looking out of place despite their best efforts to blend in. Haley had put her phone away, her eyes red and puffy from reading the thousands of vicious comments attacking her social media accounts. Brands were already dropping her from minor sponsorship deals in real-time.
"Dad, people are calling me a thief," Haley whimpered, showing him her screen. "They're making TikToks about how we stole her ticket. My modeling agency just emailed me saying they're 'pausing' our contract!"
"Shut up about your damn modeling!" Arthur snapped, his nerves frayed to a razor’s edge. "If I don't get Clara’s signature, we won't even have a roof over our heads to take pictures under!"
Suddenly, the crowd parted near the main entrance of the atrium.
Clara walked in, surrounded by Dean Bradley, Dr. Vance, and Raymond Sterling. She had exchanged her heavy doctoral gown for an elegant tailored ivory pantsuit, her valedictorian medal resting gracefully against her lapel. Every physician, trustee, and donor in the room turned toward her, raising champagne flutes in her honor.
"There she is," Arthur breathed, grabbing a glass of champagne from a passing waiter’s tray. "Follow my lead. Act like nothing happened outside. We're a family celebrating our genius daughter."
Arthur pushed his way aggressively through the crowd of dignitaries, elbowing past senior surgeons and university benefactors until he was standing five feet from Clara.
"Clara! Sweetheart!" Arthur boomed, opening his arms wide with an exaggerated, booming laugh. "There's my little superstar! I knew you had it in you all along!"
The conversation around Clara died instantly.
Dean Bradley’s brow furrowed, his jaw setting into a hard line. Raymond Sterling stepped back slightly, his expression morphing into cold curiosity.
Clara stopped mid-sentence, turning to face Arthur. Her expression was serene, totally unreadable.
"Dad," she said, her voice quiet and even.
"Oh, thank God, Clara," Vanessa piped up, forcing a tearful, motherly smile as she tried to reach for Clara’s hands. "You were magnificent up there! Simply magnificent! We were just teasing you this morning outside, darling—you know how your father loves his little practical jokes! We just wanted to surprise you inside!"
"A joke?" Clara asked, glancing down at her wrist, where the faint red bruising was still visible against the cuff of her ivory suit. "You threw me onto wet concrete so Haley could take selfies in my seat. That was a joke?"
Haley cowered behind Vanessa, unable to meet Clara’s eyes.
Arthur took another step forward, his smile turning tight and strained. "Clara, please. Not here in front of everyone. Family matters should stay private. We're so proud of you. Let’s take a family picture with Mr. Sterling and Dean Bradley. Show the world the Hensley family stands united."
"The Hensley family?" Clara tilted her head. "There is no Hensley family. There is you, your wife, and her daughter. And then there was the maid you kept around to clean up after you."
Arthur’s face darkened, the veneer of pleasantness cracking under the weight of his wounded ego. "Don't talk to me like that, young lady! I raised you! I put food on the table! I put a roof over your head after your mother died!"
May you like
"No, Arthur," Clara said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone that sliced through the room. "You didn't."
