Chapter 3 - Front Row Delusions

In Row A, Seat 4 of the grand auditorium, Arthur Hensley checked his gold-plated watch for the third time in two minutes. The energy in the hall was electrifying. Banners of deep navy and gold draped from the four-story vaulted ceiling, bearing the Latin crest of the premier medical academy on the Eastern Seaboard.
To his left, his wife Vanessa was leaning into his shoulder, whispering with breathless excitement.
"Arthur, look at the man sitting three seats down from us," she hissed, nudging his rib. "That’s Raymond Sterling! The pharmaceutical billionaire! His foundation donates tens of millions to this institution! If Haley can get a picture with him after the ceremony, her influencer agency will sign her on the spot!"
"I saw him, darling," Arthur replied, puffing out his chest and buttoning his jacket tighter over his growing stomach. "And look across the aisle. That’s the Chief of Surgery for the regional hospital network. I've been trying to get a meeting with their procurement director for eighteen months. My logistics company will double its profits if we land their biohazard disposal contract. This VIP ticket is already paying for itself."
Haley turned her camera toward Arthur, flashing her veneers. "Dad, wave to the stream! Five thousand people just joined! Tell them how proud you are to be here!"
Arthur leaned toward the lens with a practiced, benevolent patriarch smile. "Work hard, dream big, everyone! True success belongs to those with class and ambition!"
"So true, Dad!" Haley chirped, panning the camera to showcase the massive stage, where thirty distinguished professors sat in rows of velvet armchairs beneath towering floral arrangements. "We almost didn't make it inside on time, guys. Some crazy, ragged girl tried to jump in front of our car outside and ruin our entrance, but Dad handled it like a boss!"
Vanessa scoffed, checking her French-manicured nails. "Don't even mention that ungrateful girl on your feed, Haley. It lowers your brand aesthetic. Honestly, Arthur, the nerve of Clara trying to force her way in here dressed like a drenched stray. It’s bad enough she works around bedpans all day, but trying to embarrass us in front of high society?"
"She won't be embarrassing anyone ever again," Arthur said coldly. "When we get home tonight, I'm giving her thirty days to pack her bags and find her own apartment. She’s twenty-four years old and acts like a rebellious teenager. If she can't show proper respect to you and Haley, she doesn't belong under my roof."
"Good," Vanessa purred. "We can finally turn her bedroom into Haley’s walk-in wardrobe and content studio."
A sudden chime echoed through the auditorium’s state-of-the-art surround sound system. The murmuring crowd fell silent.
The stage lights dimmed slightly, shifting into a dramatic, focused spotlight that illuminated the podium. The massive twin LED screens flanking the stage flickered to life, displaying high-definition feeds of the center stage.
Dean Jonathan Bradley walked forward, stepping up to the microphone. The silver medallion of the University Chancellor hung heavy against his black-and-gold robe.
"Distinguished trustees, honored guests, esteemed faculty, and the graduating class of 2024," Dean Bradley began, his voice commanding and resonant. "Today, we celebrate not merely the completion of medical training, but the birth of a new era of medical leadership."
Haley zoomed her camera in on Dean Bradley. "Look at him, guys," she whispered to her phone. "So regal. Dad, make sure you get his business card during the reception."
"Quiet, let him speak," Arthur whispered, enjoying the proximity to power.
"Every decade," Dean Bradley continued, his gaze scanning the vast audience before resting with laser precision directly on Row A, "our institution produces one student who transcends the standard curriculum. A visionary who balances relentless clinical grit with groundbreaking scientific discovery. This year, our highest honor belongs to a student who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while working over two thousand hours of uncredited hospital support, authoring three peer-reviewed papers on targeted oncological therapies, and securing a groundbreaking patent that has already begun saving pediatric lives."
Arthur nodded along politely, turning to Vanessa. "Sounds like an absolute genius. Probably some old-money kid with private tutors and endless resources."
"Definitely," Vanessa agreed. "Not like Clara, who spent the last four years whining about being tired."
Dean Bradley leaned into the microphone, his voice ringing like a bronze bell across the hall.
