Chapter 6 - The Group Chat Meltdown

The war moved to the family group chat within ninety minutes of the door closing.
It was called *Evans Family Hub*, a digital prison I had stayed in for seven years solely to ensure Dad had access to Emma's school photos.
Now, it was lit up like a Christmas tree in a lightning storm.
**Jessica:** *I hope everyone is happy knowing that Sarah just slammed the door in Mom's face. Mom is currently at my house taking an Ativan. Sarah canceled the cruise Dad has been talking about for thirty years because she thinks Emma was "slighted" over Disney.*
**Uncle Rick:** *Wait, what cruise? What’s going on?*
**Aunt Linda:** *Sarah, honey, is this true? Your father’s retirement trip? You can't be serious.*
**Jessica:** *Oh, she’s serious. She spent $40k on a cruise to show off, kept it a secret, and then canceled it out of pure spite because Mom didn't have enough Disney tickets for Emma. She’s punishing an elderly couple over a misunderstanding.*
My phone buzzed against the marble counter every fifteen seconds.
I watched the dots dance as various cousins, aunts, and family hangers-on weighed in. Most were confused; some were appalled; a few, like Becky, remained conspicuously silent because they knew the real score.
Then Dad typed.
Dad almost never used the group chat. When his name popped up, the thread went silent.
**Dad:** *Sarah. Call me. We need to fix this as a family. There has been a terrible mistake made on all sides. Please pick up the phone.*
I stared at the screen.
*On all sides.*
That was my father’s favorite phrase. When Jessica crashed my car in college and blamed me for leaving the keys on the counter: *A mistake on all sides.* When Jessica stole three thousand dollars from my parents' joint savings to pay for a designer wedding dress and Mom blamed the bank’s online interface: *A mistake on all sides.*
There were no sides here. There was only cruelty, and the bill that had finally come due.
I unlocked my phone, opened the thread, and typed my first response of the day.
**Sarah:** *There is no mistake. I canceled the cruise because it was booked with my personal credit card, using my personal savings, for two people who do not respect me or my child.
For context, here is the ticket distribution from Saturday morning:
- Matthew (Jessica’s son): Booked.
- Sophie (Jessica’s daughter): Booked.
- Tyler (Jessica’s son): Booked.
- Logan (Diane’s son - unrelated): Booked.
- Harper (Diane’s daughter - unrelated): Booked.
- Emma (My daughter, their granddaughter): Told they "ran out" of room, handed nothing, and suggested she go to the Columbus Zoo.
The cruise refund will be used to ensure Emma never has to feel like a second-class citizen again. I am leaving this group. Do not contact me regarding the cruise. It does not exist.*
I attached one final file: a PDF copy of the cruise reservation receipt showing my name, the total amount paid ($42,186.00), and the exact cabin details: *Presidential Suite - Guests: Carol Evans & Robert Evans.*
Then I tapped *Leave Conversation.*
Before the screen cleared, a private message flashed from Diane.
*Diane.* Jessica's Pilates friend. The mother of the two children who had received Emma's tickets.
*Sarah, please call me. Immediately. I had no idea.*
I stared at Diane’s name.

Interesting. Very interesting.
