Chapter 10 - The Phoenix Takes Flight

One year later.
The lights went down inside the historic Goodman Theatre in Chicago. The auditorium was packed to capacity for the opening night gala of *The Secret Garden*.
From our box seats in the mezzanine, Lily and I watched as the curtain rose on an enchanting, living forest of hand-woven moss, blossoming silk wisteria, and breathtaking floral gowns that shimmered under the golden stage lights.
Beside Lily sat Madison, wearing a sweet, simple lavender sundress that Lily and I had sewn together in our new studio. Madison was laughing, sharing a bag of candied popcorn, looking happier and lighter than she ever had in her life. David sat beside her, smiling warmly, finally at peace.
At intermission, the house lights came up, and the artistic director took the stage to announce the production team.
"Special commendation for this evening’s visual triumph goes to our visionary costume designers: Emily Carter and Miss Lily Carter!"
The applause was deafening. The entire theater looked up toward our box, cheering and clapping.
Marcus Vance raised his champagne flute toward us from the orchestra pit, winking with theatrical grandeur.
Lily looked up at me, her eyes shining in the warm glow of the chandelier lights. She clutched my hand tightly in hers.
"Mommy," she whispered above the sound of the applause. "Do you remember what you said when my dress was covered in paint?"
"I remember every word, sweetheart," I replied, smiling down at the brave, beautiful girl who had taught me the true meaning of strength.

"You told me that when people try to burn your dreams," Lily said proudly, touching the small bronze phoenix brooch pinned to the lapel of my blazer, "you don't run away from the fire. You use it to fly."
And as the music swelled for the second act, we held hands, leaving the shadows of the past behind forever, flying high into a future filled with light, laughter, and unbreakable love.
