Chapter 6 - The Poison of the Golden Child

"Officers, wait! Please!" Patricia cried out, throwing her arms around Brooke as if shielding a toddler from harm. "She didn't mean it! She was under immense stress! Emily, tell them! Tell them not to press charges! She’s your sister!"

I looked at my mother.

For thirty-two years, I had watched this exact scene play out. When Brooke failed high school algebra, I was forced to give up my extracurriculars to tutor her. When Brooke crashed my father’s car in college, my savings account was drained to pay the deductible because "Brooke was fragile." When Brooke wanted to start a boutique that bled money, my parents secretly co-signed loans using the inheritance my grandfather had specifically earmarked for me.

Brooke was the golden child who could do no wrong. I was the emotional pack mule expected to carry the family's burdens without complaint.

"Emily," my father commanded, stepping toward me with that familiar stern look he had used to intimidate me since childhood. "You will tell the officer that this is a private family misunderstanding. You will decline to file a report. Do you hear me? If Brooke gets a criminal record, her boutique will lose its lease, and our family will be disgraced in this town."

I took Lily’s hand. Her little fingers squeezed mine. She was looking at her grandfather not with affection, but with profound disappointment.

"No, Dad," I said, my voice steady, quiet, and absolutely resolute.

Frank blinked, stunned. "What did you say?"

"I said no," I repeated, meeting his eyes without flinching. "For my entire life, you taught me that Brooke’s feelings are sacred and mine are worthless. You watched her destroy a child’s hard work with scissors and paint, and your first instinct wasn't to comfort Lily—it was to justify the cruelty. You are not protecting a family, Frank. You are protecting a bully."

"Emily Carter!" Patricia shrieked, tears of theatrical indignation welling in her eyes. "How dare you speak to your father like that! We raised you! We gave you everything!"

"You gave me conditional tolerance," I replied coldly. "Officer Daniels, I will be pressing charges for criminal destruction of property. Furthermore, Dr. Harrison, I request that Brooke Miller be banned from school premises for the safety of my daughter."

Dr. Harrison nodded firmly. "Consider it done. Mrs. Miller, you are formally barred from Jefferson Elementary grounds pending a district review."

Brooke began to hyperventilate, sliding down the locker wall as parents whispered, pointed, and live-streamed her humiliation to neighborhood Facebook groups.
