Chapter 7 - Public Humiliation & The Fall

Owen swallowed hard, trying desperately to salvage his shattered composure. He looked around the room, acutely aware that the senior partners, including Robert Sterling, were watching from the elevated VIP terrace.
"Sarah," Owen said through clenched teeth, his voice a low, warning hiss. "You need to leave. Right now. You are causing an inappropriate scene at a corporate event. If you have personal matters to discuss, we can do it privately through counsel."
"Personal matters?" I tilted my head, looking at him with amused contempt. "Is it a personal matter that you used the client escrow funds of Carter & Sterling to purchase that diamond necklace hanging around Claire’s neck?"
The room went completely, dead silent.
Even the string quartet stopped playing.
Robert Sterling, a silver-haired man in his late sixties, stepped down from the VIP platform, his brow furrowed in anger. "What is the meaning of this? Julian, control your guest!"
"My guest is David Mercer’s sole heir, Robert," Julian said, stepping forward, his voice booming across the ballroom with devastating authority. "And as the principal representative of the Bennett Majority Trust, which owns forty-five percent of this firm, I have called an emergency executive session right here, right now."
Julian raised a hand. At the back of the room, two uniformed officers from the Cook County Financial Crimes Division stepped through the doors, accompanied by an independent forensic auditor carrying three heavy boxes of documents.
"No..." Claire whispered, her voice trembling. She took two steps backward, trying to melt into the crowd, but two security guards silently blocked the ballroom exits.
"Over the past forty-eight hours," Julian announced, looking at the assembled board members, "a complete forensic audit of the Mercer-Sterling joint portfolio was conducted. It reveals that Owen Mercer, with the direct assistance of Claire Bennett, embezzled one point two million dollars from the firm’s trust accounts to service Claire Bennett’s defaulted loans, luxury credit lines, and offshore shell accounts."
Owen’s knees literally buckled. He grabbed the edge of a high-top cocktail table to keep from falling. "That's a lie! That's a fabrication! Robert, tell him! You authorized those disbursements for client development!"
Robert Sterling froze. He looked at Julian, then looked at the auditor walking toward him with a stamped binder of federal wire logs.
Sterling’s face turned an ashen gray. "I... I authorized no such thing. Owen presented them as short-term real estate bridge loans backed by his wife’s family trust."
"My trust never backed a single dollar," I said, my voice ringing out like a judge delivering a death sentence. "Owen forged my signature while I was in the high-risk labor ward at St. Jude’s Hospital. He filed a fraudulent petition to have me declared insane so he could drain my son’s inheritance."
Gasps erupted across the room. Several prominent society women covered their mouths in horror.
"You monster," a woman’s voice whispered from the crowd.
Owen looked around wildly, his eyes bulging. "No! Listen to me! Sarah is lying! She's suffering from postpartum psychosis! She’s crazy! She threw Claire onto the street! She’s trying to ruin me because she’s jealous!"
He lunged toward me, his hands outstretched as if to physically silence me, but Julian stepped in front of him like an iron wall. Julian caught Owen by the collar of his tuxedo, arresting his momentum instantly, while the two financial crimes detectives closed in from behind.
"Owen Mercer," the lead detective announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and corporate embezzlement."
"Claire!" Owen screamed, twisting in the detective's grip, his face contorted in sheer, unadulterated panic. "Claire, tell them! Tell them it was your idea! You told me how to route the accounts! Claire!"
Claire didn't look at him. She spun around, her eyes wide with desperation, looking directly at Julian.
"Julian, please," she cried, her tears flowing freely now, ruining her mascara. "You know Owen manipulated me! He told me he was divorcing her! He told me the money was his! I was a victim here, Julian! You know how vulnerable I was!"
Julian looked down at her with pure, cold disgust.
"Detective," Julian said, gesturing toward Claire. "The second warrant on that clipboard is for Claire Bennett. Felony co-conspiracy and interstate receipt of stolen funds."
Claire’s theatrical tears stopped instantly.
Her jaw dropped. Her delicate, fragile mask shattered into a snarling, feral rage.
"You bastard!" Claire shrieked, lunging at Julian with her manicured nails aimed at his face. "You ruined my life! You took everything from me!"
Two female officers tackled Claire to the polished floor before she could touch Julian. The emerald velvet dress tore at the seam as she was pinned against the parquet, screaming obscenities that echoed off the vaulted ceiling of the grand ballroom.
Owen was shoved down beside her, the handcuffs clicking shut around his wrists with a cold, final snap.
I stood beside Julian, watching the man who had promised to love me, the man who had abandoned me while I was bleeding with his newborn son, dragged through the center aisle of the Drake Hotel like a common thief.
As Owen was pulled past me, our eyes met.
There was no arrogance left in him. No condescending smirk. Only the hollow, terrifying realization that his entire life was over.
"Sarah..." he sobbed, tears and snot running down his face. "Please... think of Wesley... please don't do this to Wesley's father..."
I leaned down slightly, looking into the eyes of the man I had once loved.

"Wesley doesn't have a father, Owen," I whispered softly. "He only has me. And unlike you... I protect what is mine."
