Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and old Chicago money. Men in bespoke black-tie tuxedos mingled with women adorned in silk, diamonds, and floor-length evening gowns. The clinking of crystal flutes and the subdued melody of a live string quartet filled the vaulted room.

Owen Mercer stood near the grand ice sculpture, holding a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon.

He had spent the last seventy-two hours in a state of manic desperation, but tonight, he felt untouchable. His release on bail had cost him ten thousand dollars, borrowed from a high-interest private lender, but Claire had reassured him that Robert Sterling had smoothed things over with the managing committee.

Claire stood beside him, a vision in a strapless emerald green velvet gown that set off her porcelain skin and dark hair. Around her neck was a sparkling diamond choker—the very choker purchased with the funds drained from Wesley’s college account.

"Are you sure Robert will announce the partnership tonight?" Owen whispered nervously, checking his Rolex. "Sarah changed the locks. Her lawyers sent a formal freeze notice on the joint accounts. If I don't get that seventy-thousand-dollar signing bonus tonight, Claire, my checks will bounce by Monday."

Claire smiled sweetly, patting his arm with manicured fingers. "Relax, darling. Robert promised me this morning. Sarah is an emotional wreck sitting alone in a dark house with a screaming baby. Once you have the partnership, we file the emergency conservatorship petition again with a private judge Robert knows. She won't have a dime left to fight us."

Owen exhaled, puffing out his chest. "You're right. She’s nothing without me. She’s probably crying into her pillow right now."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open.

The string quartet did not stop playing, but a ripple of silence spread across the room like an electric current. Heads began to turn. Conversations died mid-sentence.

Standing at the top of the grand marble staircase was Julian Vance.

And resting on Julian’s arm, clad in an exquisite, high-necked midnight-blue silk gown with a cape that fell gracefully over her shoulders, was me.

My hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, secured with diamond pins. My makeup was flawless, concealing any trace of fatigue, highlighting the high contours of my cheekbones and the fierce, icy resolve in my eyes. I walked down the marble steps with measured, regal grace, Julian matching my stride with absolute authority.

Owen’s champagne flute slipped from his fingers.

The crystal glass shattered against the polished parquet floor with a loud, ringing crash, spraying vintage champagne across the hem of Claire’s emerald velvet gown.

"Sarah?" Owen gasped, his voice cracking loud enough to turn twenty nearby heads.

Claire’s face went completely white. She recoiled as if she had seen a ghost, her hand flying to the diamond choker at her neck.

"What is she doing here?" Claire hissed under her breath, clawing at Owen’s arm. "You said she couldn't leave the house! She was ripped open seventy-two hours ago!"

"I... I don't know," Owen stammered, his eyes wide with rising terror as he watched us approach.

I didn't stop until I was standing three feet from my husband. The crowd parted around us, sensing the suffocating tension that suddenly gripped the room.

May you like

"Good evening, Owen," I said, my voice rich, smooth, and echoing clearly over the murmurs of Chicago's elite. "You forgot your cufflinks on the dresser when the police arrested you on Tuesday. I thought I would bring them to you personally."
