Chapter 9 - Darkness in the Ward

The silence lasted for half a second before the emergency red backup lights kicked on, bathing the sterile room in an eerie, bloody glow.

"Stay down!" Luca’s command cut through the room like a whip.

In a fraction of a second, Luca had his firearm drawn, his body positioned between the examination table and the door. Michael immediately shielded Emily with his own torso, pressing her flat against the vinyl mattress.

Dr. Chen gasped, stepping back against the wall. "The power grid... the hospital has triple redundancy. The main lines shouldn't fail unless someone cut the municipal substation."

Over Luca’s tactical earpiece, Marco’s voice exploded through a burst of static: *“Boss! Ambush in the parking structure! Two incendiary devices just went off on level two! They cut the main power cables to the fourth floor!”*

"How many?" Luca demanded into his mic.

*“At least six! They're wearing tactical gear and gas masks! Boss, they didn't come to negotiate—they're throwing tear gas into the ventilation shafts!”*

Right on cue, a faint hissing sound came from the overhead air ducts. A thin wispy trail of white smoke began to curl into the room, carrying the acrid, chemical stench of CS gas.

"Emily," I coughed, grabbing a bottle of sterile saline solution from the counter and soaking two surgical towels. "Put this over your nose and mouth! Don't inhale deeply!"

Emily pressed the wet towel to her face, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at her father. "Dad! What do we do?"

Luca reached into his pocket, pulled out a second pistol—a compact Glock 19—and tossed it to Michael.

Michael caught it awkwardly, staring at the weapon in sheer disbelief. "I've... I've never fired a gun in my life, Mr. Moretti!"

"Point it at the door. If anyone wearing a mask walks through that threshold who isn't me or Marco, pull the trigger until it clicks," Luca said with chilling clarity. "Can you do that for my daughter?"

Michael swallowed hard. He adjusted his glasses with his left hand, gripped the textured handle of the Glock with both hands, and planted his feet firmly on the linoleum floor.

"Yes, sir," Michael said, his voice entirely devoid of hesitation.

"Good man," Luca muttered.

Luca turned to me. "Claire, there is a service elevator behind the linen closet at the end of the hall. It operates on an independent hydraulic battery backup. Take Emily, Michael, and Dr. Chen down to the sub-basement boiler room. There is an underground drainage tunnel that empties onto the riverwalk."

"What about you?" I asked, my heart hammering in my ears.

Luca checked the magazine of his pistol, racking the slide with a definitive metallic click.

"I'm going to introduce Vanessa Bellini to the consequences of threatening my grandson."

Luca stepped out into the smoke-filled corridor, closing the heavy wooden door behind him.

Through the narrow glass observation window in the door, I watched what happened next.

Two men in black tactical gear rounded the far corner of the hallway, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the doors. They had red armbands tied around their sleeves—the Bellini syndicate colors.

Luca didn't seek cover.

He moved forward with terrifying, rhythmic precision.

*BANG. BANG.*

Two shots echoed down the tiled hallway like cannon fire. The first hit the lead shooter directly in the chest, the kinetic force knocking him backward onto the slick floor. The second shooter tried to raise his rifle, but Luca closed the distance with shocking speed, knocking the barrel aside with his left arm while firing a single round upward through the man’s tactical helmet visor.

Both men collapsed into the smoke.

Luca didn't even pause to check their pulses. He stepped over the bodies, his weapon raised, advancing toward the stairwell where the heavy sound of approaching boots signaled the arrival of the rest of the hit team.

"Claire!" Emily tugged on my sleeve, coughing slightly into her towel. "The linen closet! We have to move!"

"Go!" I urged, pushing Dr. Chen ahead of us.

We slipped out of room 4-B into the haze of tear gas, our eyes stinging and watering from the chemicals. Michael walked backwards, his gun trained on the stairwell door where the deafening sound of an automatic rifle burst erupted—Luca returning fire against overwhelming numbers.

"Move, Emily, keep your head down!" Michael urged, his voice cracking with protective fury.

We reached the linen closet. Dr. Chen threw open the wooden doors, pushed aside stacks of white sheets, and pressed the emergency release button on the hidden stainless-steel freight elevator.

The metal doors parted with a low, hydraulic hum.

"Get in!" Dr. Chen whispered frantically.

Emily stepped inside, clutching her stomach. Michael followed, his gun still raised.

I was about to step through the threshold when a cold, feminine voice spoke from the shadows behind us.

"Going somewhere, little maid?"

I froze.

Stepping out from behind an industrial laundry cart at the far end of the hall was Vanessa Bellini.

She had abandoned her red silk gown for black combat trousers and a leather jacket. Her hair was pulled back in a tight, messy ponytail. In her right hand, she held a snub-nosed .38 revolver, pointed directly at Emily’s chest.

Her face was twisted into a grotesque, manic sneer.

"Step out of the elevator, Claire," Vanessa whispered, her finger tightening on the trigger. "Or I put a bullet through Emily’s womb right now."
