Chapter 11 - The Riverwalk Escape

The elevator plunged downward into the damp, cool foundations of the hospital.
Inside the metal cage, Emily sank to her knees, completely overwhelmed. Michael fell beside her, wrapping his arms around her trembling frame, the empty Glock still clutched tightly in his right hand.
"You shot her," Emily whispered, burying her face into Michael’s shoulder. "Michael... you shot her."
"She was going to kill our son," Michael said, his voice flat, his chest heaving with shock. His hands were shaking so violently the gun rattled against the metal floor until I gently reached down and took the weapon from his fingers, engaging the manual safety catch.
"You saved her life, Michael," I said softly, crouching beside them. "Both of you. But we aren't safe yet. We need to reach the riverwalk."
The elevator shuddered to a halt with a heavy mechanical clunk.
The doors slid open, revealing a dimly lit brick utility tunnel smelling of sulfur, damp limestone, and stagnant river water. Pipes ran along the curved ceiling, hissing with escaping steam.
Standing ten yards away, illuminated by the tactical light mounted to his assault rifle, was Marco.
Behind him, tied to a metal railing at the tunnel’s drainage outlet, bobbed a twenty-eight-foot twin-engine midnight-black speedboat, its exhaust purring quietly beneath the surface of the Chicago River.
"Move!" Marco barked, lowering his weapon as he recognized us. "The feds just breached the hospital lobby above! Chicago PD has sealed off the bridges, but the waterway is still clear!"
We hurried down the slick wooden boardwalk toward the boat. Michael supported Emily, practically carrying her weight as her breathing grew shallow and labored.
"Emily, talk to me," I urged, watching her pale complexion. "Are you having contractions?"
"My back," Emily gasped, clutching her lower spine. "It feels like... like someone is tightening a belt around my hips."
Dr. Chen climbed into the boat first, immediately preparing a medical kit from the forward cabin. "Stress-induced Braxton Hicks, most likely, but we can't take any chances. We need to get her to our private clinic in Kenosha immediately."
Marco helped Emily step onto the fiberglass deck, settling her into the cushioned passenger bench. Michael sat beside her, wrapping a thick wool blanket around her shoulders.
I stepped onto the gunwale, looking back down the dark brick tunnel.
"Marco," I asked, my heart tight in my chest. "Where is Luca? He was right behind us on the fourth floor!"
Marco’s weathered face tightened, his jaw working silently. He looked at his watch.
"The boss told me to wait three minutes," Marco said grimly. "If he wasn't at the drainage grate by 1:15, I was ordered to cut the lines and get Emily out of the city."
Emily’s head snapped up. "No! We aren't leaving without my father! Marco, turn the boat around! Go back for him!"
"Emily," Marco said, his voice laced with immense sorrow and unyielding loyalty. "Your father gave me an order. My life belongs to him, but my mission is to protect you and your child. If I disobey Luca Moretti, everything he did today was for nothing."
"Marco, please!" Emily sobbed, trying to stand up, but Michael gently held her down. "He’s alone up there with her! He’s alone with whatever Bellini soldiers are left!"
Marco reached for the throttle, his knuckles turning white.
"Ten seconds," Marco muttered, staring down the tunnel. "Nine... eight..."
A heavy splashing sound echoed from the dark water near the drainage pipe.
Out of the steam and gloom, a dark silhouette emerged, wading through waist-deep water toward the stern of the boat.
Marco raised his rifle instantly. "Identify yourself!"
"If you shoot me with my own rifle, Marco, I'm firing you," a gravelly, exhausted voice wheezed from the darkness.
"Dad!" Emily screamed.
Luca hauled himself up onto the swim platform, water pouring from his torn overcoat. His left arm was wrapped in a makeshift pressure bandage made from a torn white bedsheet, soaked through with dark blood. His face was bruised, his lip split, but his eyes were clear, sharp, and unmistakably alive.
Michael and Marco rushed to the stern, grabbing Luca’s shoulders and hauling his heavy frame onto the deck.
Luca collapsed onto the cushioned bench across from Emily. He looked up at his daughter, his chest heaving, water dripping from his chin.
"You're alive," Emily wept, reaching across the narrow aisle to touch his cheek. "Dad, you're alive."
Luca managed a weak, painful smile. "Did you really think I was going to miss my grandson's first birthday party?"
"What about Vanessa?" I asked quietly, kneeling beside Luca to inspect the makeshift bandage on his arm.
Luca looked back toward the dark mouth of the drainage tunnel as Marco shoved the throttles forward, the twin engines roaring to life, sending the black boat cutting through the choppy waters of the river toward the open expanse of Lake Michigan.
"The FBI tactical team breached the fourth-floor corridor thirty seconds after you left," Luca said, his voice stripped of all emotion. "Vanessa was holding an unregistered firearm, standing over two dead Bellini operatives, covered in gunpowder residue."
A cold, grim satisfaction settled over his battered features.
"She will spend the rest of her natural life in a supermax facility in Terre Haute, Indiana. Her father was arrested at his country club twenty minutes ago. The Bellini family no longer exists."
Luca winced as I tightened the bandage around his bicep. A deep graze from a 9mm round had torn through the muscle, but the bone was intact.
"Thank you, Claire," Luca whispered, his eyes meeting mine. "You saved my family today. A debt like that... a Moretti never forgets."
As the boat burst out of the river mouth into the vast, open waters of Lake Michigan, leaving the towering glass spires of Chicago behind us, the dark storm clouds finally began to break. A single ray of golden afternoon sunlight pierced the mist, warming the deck.
Emily rested her head against Michael’s shoulder, her hand resting over her belly.
