Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail Unfolds

By Sunday afternoon, a professional cleaning crew had sanitized the dining room, hauled away the spoiled food, and removed the stained sofa Pamela had ruined. A locksmith had re-keyed every exterior door, installed high-resolution security cameras, and updated the digital alarm codes.
I sat at the clean walnut dining table alongside Marcus Vance, my long-time business attorney, and Evelyn Carter. Spread across the table were four binders containing bank statements, wire transfers, and the medical incident reports Evelyn had meticulously kept.
"Audrey, the situation is more severe than simple household theft," Marcus said, tapping a red pen against a ledger. "Reid wasn't just funneling money to Brooke's boutique. We tracked three wire transfers totaling thirty thousand dollars sent to a private holding company registered in Delaware."
"What kind of holding company?" I asked.
"It’s called *Clearview Acquisitions*," Marcus explained. "We ran the beneficial ownership records. The majority shareholder is Reid Calloway, but the co-signatory is a woman named Vanessa Price."
I frowned. "Vanessa Price? She was the regional project manager on the Richmond commercial site I managed two years ago."
Evelyn leaned forward. "Audrey... about five weeks ago, a woman driving a silver Mercedes came to the house while Pamela and Reid were having lunch on the patio. I was in the kitchen preparing Helen’s medication. They didn't know I could hear them. That woman—Vanessa—was laughing about a commercial real estate property they were buying off-market. Reid told her that as soon as your Alaska contract paid out its completion bonus, he’d have enough leverage to finalize the purchase."
Everything snapped into sharp, terrible clarity.
Reid hadn't just been passively leeching off my income. He had been orchestrating a complete financial pivot. He knew that my Kodiak project came with a six-figure performance bonus upon final delivery. His plan had been to siphon my liquid assets, run down my mother’s health so she would require institutionalization at state expense, and then hit me with a contested divorce once his new commercial venture was operational.
"He tried to keep Helen hidden away because she heard everything," Evelyn said quietly. "Helen told me that she overheard Reid and Vanessa talking in the study late one evening. That’s why Pamela isolated her. They were terrified Helen would call you and tell you about the other woman and the real estate scheme."
I leaned back in my chair, feeling an icy calm settle over my thoughts. The grief of betrayal had completely burned away, leaving behind pure, calculated resolve.
"Marcus," I said, looking at my attorney. "Does Virginia still recognize fraud-based tort claims in divorce proceedings?"
Marcus smiled thinly, a predatory look in his eye. "Not only does Virginia recognize them, Audrey, but when combined with the Adult Exploitation and Neglect statutes, Reid’s share of any marital assets will effectively drop to zero. Furthermore, if he used commingled marital funds to invest in *Clearview Acquisitions*, we can petition the court to place an immediate constructive trust over the entire property."

"Do it," I said. "File the injunction first thing Monday morning. Freeze every asset tied to Clearview, Reid, and Brooke’s design firm."
