Chapter 3 - The Audit in the Dark

The waiting room of the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center was quiet at two in the morning. Helen was resting in an examination room, receiving intravenous antibiotics for cellulitis that had developed around her neglected knee joint. The attending physician had been blunt: another week without treatment, and the infection could have entered her bloodstream.
Sitting in a vinyl armchair under the fluorescent lights, I pulled up my laptop, connected to the hospital’s Wi-Fi, and initiated a forensic sweep of every account Reid had access to.
For nine months, I had been working eighty-hour weeks in sub-zero temperatures, trusting my spouse of four years to manage our domestic life. I had deposited my monthly salary of fourteen thousand dollars into our operational accounts, keeping a small cushion in my personal portfolio.
As the transaction histories downloaded into spreadsheets, the timeline crystallized.
The caregiving agency, *Comfort Care Partners*, hadn't been paid since late September. Yet, every month on the second day, a withdrawal of exactly $750 had been made from our joint account labeled "Caregiver Reimbursement." The money hadn't stayed in the account—it had been transferred immediately into a checking account under Reid’s sole name.
I dug deeper.
Over the past four months, the joint account had been drained of nearly forty-five thousand dollars beyond our standard living expenses.
There were charges for high-end furniture showrooms, weekend spa retreats in Charlottesville, and recurring payments of two thousand dollars to an entity titled *Brooke Calloway Designs LLC*. Reid had been funding his sister’s failing interior design boutique while telling my mother there wasn't enough money for physical therapy.
My phone vibrated on the armrest. It was an incoming call from an unknown local number.
"Hello?"
"Audrey? Is that you?" The voice was hesitant, distinctly familiar.
"Yes. Who is this?"
"It’s Evelyn. Evelyn Carter. I've been checking the local hospital registries since midnight. A friend of mine works triage at VCU and mentioned Helen was admitted. Audrey, I am so sorry. I tried to reach you, but Reid told me you blocked my agency after firing me."
A lump formed in my throat. "Evelyn... Reid lied to both of us. He told my mother that I cut the contract due to budget constraints."
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. "That man is a monster. Audrey, I didn't leave quietly six weeks ago. I filed an incident report with my agency director. Pamela Calloway was verbally abusing your mother, and when I tried to intervene, Reid threatened to file false complaints against my nursing license. I documented everything. I took photos of the condition they kept her in before they pushed me out the door."
"You have photos?"
"Photos, timestamps, and an audio recording of Pamela telling me that Helen was 'just an anchor dragging down Reid's inheritance.' I kept it all because I knew something was wrong. Where are you right now?"
"VCU Medical Center," I replied, my hands gripping the edge of the laptop. "Evelyn, can you send those files to my legal counsel?"
May you like
"I'll do better than that," Evelyn said firmly. "I'm coming down there right now. It's time someone holds that family accountable."
