Chapter 8 - THE WAR FOR CHICAGO’S CROWN

The clock in the lobby of Northwestern Memorial Hospital read 5:15 AM.

Outside, the autumn dawn was breaking over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in violent streaks of orange and slate-gray.

On the eighth floor, the pediatric intensive care unit was under absolute lockdown. Twelve heavily armed Russo soldiers in tactical gear stood guard at every elevator bank, emergency stairwell, and service entrance.

Inside the primary recovery suite, Emily was resting, holding tiny Alexander against her bare chest in skin-to-skin contact, while a specialized neonatal nurse sat beside her holding little Sophia. Both babies were breathing on their own now, their oxygen saturation levels stabilizing with every passing hour.

Suddenly, the red emergency alarm on the floor shrieked to life.

*“Security breach, Level 8 West. Code Black. All personnel initiate emergency lockdown protocols.”*

Emily’s eyes snapped open in absolute panic. She clutched Alexander tightly against her breast, her motherly instinct overriding the searing pain in her abdominal surgical incision.

“Dante!” she cried out.

Before the nurse could move, the heavy reinforced doors of the suite were kicked open.

Standing in the doorway was not Dante.

It was Don Antonio Moretti—the seventy-year-old patriarch of the Moretti family—surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries carrying tactical shotguns and wearing black body armor.

Antonio’s face was twisted in an expression of deranged, suicidal grief.

“Where is he?” Antonio barked, leveling a nickel-plated revolver directly at Emily’s bed. “Where is Dante Russo? He drowned my boy in the river! He executed my son like a dog!”

Emily pressed her back against the headboard, curling her body entirely over infant Alexander to shield him with her own flesh. “Please... don't hurt my babies... please!”

“Your babies?” Antonio spat, stepping forward, his finger tightening on the trigger. “Your bastard twins are the reason my dynasty died tonight! If my family burns, Dante’s bloodline ends right now!”

*BANG.*

A high-caliber gunshot tore through the suite, shattering the glass divider behind Antonio.

Antonio’s left shoulder exploded in a mist of red as he was violently spun around by the impact.

Standing in the shattered doorway of the adjoining observation room was Dante Russo.

He was not wearing his suit coat. His white shirt was rolled to the elbows, covered in gunpowder residue, and in his right hand was a heavy .45 caliber semi-automatic.

Dante didn't shout. He didn't issue warnings.

He moved with the terrifying, fluid speed of an apex predator. Before the remaining three mercenaries could swing their shotguns toward him, Dante fired three consecutive double-taps.

*Crack-crack. Crack-crack. Crack-crack.*

The mercenaries dropped to the linoleum floor like sacks of wet cement, dead before their bodies finished falling.

Antonio Moretti fell to his knees, clutching his mangled shoulder, staring up at Dante with eyes wide in horrific realization.

“Dante... wait...” Antonio gasped, coughing blood onto the floor. “The council... the five families... we can make a deal...”

Dante walked slowly toward the kneeling don. He didn't look at Antonio’s face. He looked down at the nickel-plated revolver lying on the floor three feet away.

Dante kicked the revolver across the room, sending it sliding beneath a medical cabinet.

Then, he stood over the old man.

“You came into a hospital,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that was more terrifying than the gunfire. “You aimed a weapon at my wife. You aimed a weapon at my newborn son.”

“I... I was avenging my boy...” Antonio wheezed.

“Your son was a traitor who put his hands on my queen,” Dante said coldly. “And you are a relic of an era that ends today.”

Dante raised his weapon, pressed the warm muzzle directly against Antonio Moretti’s forehead, and pulled the trigger.

The muffled *thud* was swallowed by the blaring sirens in the corridor.

Antonio’s body collapsed forward, lifeless.

Dante lowered the gun, dropped the empty magazine, and clicked a fresh one into the grip with practiced ease. He holstered the weapon beneath his arm, took a deep breath, and turned toward the bed.

The lethal fury that had consumed him for the past twenty-four hours vanished instantly, melting away like spring snow.

He hurried to the side of the bed, falling to his knees beside Emily.

“Emily,” he breathed, his hands hovering over her trembling shoulders, terrified to touch her because of the gunpowder on his skin. “Are you hurt? Did anyone touch you? Did he hit you?”

Emily looked down at him. She was trembling, tears streaming silently down her pale cheeks, but her eyes were clear.

She looked at the man who had torn apart the entire criminal underworld of Chicago in a single night just to keep her safe. She saw the profound, desperate agony in his eyes—a king who would burn down his own palace if it meant keeping a single ember from touching her skin.

Slowly, carefully, Emily reached out with her free hand, cupping Dante’s stubbled, blood-spattered cheek.

“We are safe, Dante,” she whispered, leaning forward until her forehead rested against his. “We are safe now.”

Dante closed his eyes, his broad shoulders shaking with silent, dry sobs as he buried his face in the soft crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet, pure scent of his wife and his newborn son.
