Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW OF THE MORETTIS

Dante stood in the private security bunker beneath the mansion’s west wing.

The room was bathed in the cool blue glow of thirty high-definition monitors. Sitting at the console was Leo Varga, the syndicate’s chief technical officer. Leo’s fingers were flying across three mechanical keyboards, bypassing firewalls and recovering deleted data streams from the estate’s local cloud backup.

“I’m into the hard-drive mirrors,” Leo announced, his voice tight. “The local footage between 8:00 AM and 11:30 AM was wiped manually from the master terminal in the primary office. That requires Level Four biometric authorization.”

Dante stood behind him, his arms crossed over his chest, his knuckles white. “Whose thumbprint?”

“Vanessa Laurent’s,” Leo replied without hesitation. “She logged in at 8:14 AM. She disabled the exterior gate sensors, the foyer cameras, and the staircase dome camera. But she didn't know about the secondary redundancy loop you installed last winter.”

“Pull it up,” Dante commanded.

Leo pressed three keys. The center 4K monitor flickered, then resolved into a crystal-clear, high-angle view of the grand foyer from earlier that morning.

Dante’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheekbone.

On the screen, Emily appeared.

She looked skeletal. The vibrant, laughing girl Dante had married eighteen months ago had been reduced to a shadow. Dark violet circles bruised the skin beneath her eyes. Her slender frame was dwarfed by the heavy, ugly black uniform. She was holding her protruding belly with one trembling hand, leaning heavily against the banister as she descended the steps.

Vanessa stepped into the frame, holding a high-end smartphone to her ear, laughing dismissively.

Emily reached the landing, pulled out her own cracked phone, and dialed. On the security feed’s synchronized timestamp, Dante saw the exact time: *10:14 AM.*

His phone had rung at 10:14 AM. He remembered silencing it while Vanessa poured his coffee.

On screen, Emily spoke, her lips moving in frantic, desperate pleas. Vanessa hung up her own phone, walked over, and snatched Emily’s device right out of her hand.

“Enhance audio on channel three,” Dante ordered, his voice deadly calm.

Leo adjusted the frequency sliders. The room filled with the scratchy, amplified sound of the foyer’s hidden microphones.

*“Give it back, Vanessa, please!”* Emily’s voice cried out, thin and breaking. *“The contractions are three minutes apart. Something is wrong. The babies aren't kicking anymore!”*

*“I told you, little mouse, Dante is busy,”* Vanessa’s voice replied through the speakers, dripping with venomous amusement. *“He doesn't want you calling him. He’s with me. He’s always with me. Now, be a good girl and scrub the mud off the rear veranda before the rain sets in.”*

Then, a third figure entered the frame from the front entrance.

Dante leaned closer, his eyes narrowing to slits.

The man was tall, wide-shouldered, with a long, jagged scar cutting through his left eyebrow and trailing down his cheek. He was wearing an expensive leather jacket and chewing on an unlit toothpick.

“Vincent Moretti,” Frank hissed from behind Dante. “The bastard son of old man Moretti. He’s their top enforcer.”

On the screen, Vincent walked up to Emily with a predatory grin. He reached out and stroked the side of her face. Emily recoiled, slapping his hand away with whatever strength she had left.

Vincent’s smile vanished. He grabbed her wrist, twisting it violently until Emily sank to her knees, crying out in agony.

*“You should listen to the lady, sweetheart,”* Vincent’s voice came through the speakers, raspy and mocking. *“Once Dante signs the northern territory over to us to keep his little empire afloat, you won't even have this floor to sleep on. Give me the damn phone.”*

Vincent wrenched the phone from her grip and threw it against the marble fireplace, where it shattered into pieces.

Emily tried to pull herself up using the banister. She was sobbing, bleeding through her uniform already, her body trembling with systemic shock. She made it up two steps, trying to flee toward her bedroom to find another way out.

Vanessa stepped onto the bottom step, blocked her path, and shoved her.

It wasn't an accident. It was a cold, calculated, two-handed shove against Emily’s frail shoulders.

Emily’s foot caught the edge of the stair. She tumbled backward, her spine slamming into the heavy iron baluster before she crashed onto the lower landing, her head striking the floor with a sickening, hollow thud.

On screen, Vincent looked down at her bleeding, unconscious form, then looked at Vanessa.

*“She’s bleeding out,”* Vincent said on the tape. *“If she dies here, Dante won't negotiate. He’ll burn the city.”*

*“Then let him burn it,”* Vanessa snapped on the recording. *“Call the municipal ambulance. Make it look like a domestic fall. By the time he figures it out, the Morettis will already control the river terminals.”*

The video cut off as Vanessa finally figured out how to cut the main breaker.

The bunker fell into a suffocating, absolute silence.

Leo kept his eyes glued to his keyboard, terrified to move. Frank took a step back, his hand resting on his weapon, knowing that the man standing before them was no longer a rational syndicate leader.

He was a monster untethered from his leash.

Dante slowly stood upright. His expression was completely blank. The rage had burned through all heat, turning into an absolute, sub-zero void.

“Frank.”

“Yes, Don Dante.”

“Where is Vanessa right now?”

“In the wine cellar beneath the carriage house, Boss. Two guards are watching her.”

“Keep her alive. Not comfortable. Just alive.” Dante turned toward the exit. “Call the captains of all five families. Tell them that effective midnight tonight, the Russo syndicate is declaring total war on the Moretti clan.”

“Boss... what about the city council? The police commissioner?”

Dante stopped at the reinforced steel door of the bunker and glanced back over his shoulder.

“Tell the commissioner that if a single squad car enters the Moretti territory tonight, I will personally hang him from the Michigan Avenue bridge.”
