Chapter 9 - The Ambush at the Gala

Maya looked breathtaking.
She wore a tailored navy maternity dress that accentuated the proud, beautiful swell of her six-month belly. Her long dark hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders. Her chin was held high, her spine straight, her eyes clear, bright, and blazing with righteous fury.
She didn't look like a hysterical, broken woman on the verge of suicide.
She looked like a queen coming to reclaim her throne.
Beside her walked Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Klein, two armed Special Agents from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division, and Dr. Sarah Chen.
The color didn't just drain from Evelyn’s face; her entire body seemed to petrify into stone.
Julian let out a strangled, animalistic whimper, shoving his chair back so violently it overturned, crashing against the mahogany credenza.
"Maya...?" Evelyn gasped, her voice cracking into a jagged, ugly rasp. "You... you were..."
"I was drugged, Evelyn," Maya said, her voice clear, resonant, and steady, carrying to every single corner of the crowded boardroom. "You and your pathetic son slipped Haloperidol into my tea for eight weeks. You beat me in my own kitchen when I refused to sign away my husband's life's work. You forged my name on corporate resolutions. And you attempted to sell my unborn child to an offshore broker for two point four million dollars."
Gasps erupted across the room.
The vice president of the bank stepped back from the table as if it had caught fire. The photographer lowered his camera, staring in open-mouthed shock.
"Lies!" Evelyn shrieked, slamming both palms down onto the table, her pearls shaking against her throat. "This is slander! She's insane! Arthur, call building security! Have these people removed! Look at her, she’s having a hysterical breakdown!"
"Security isn't coming, Mrs. Mercer," Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Klein said, stepping forward and dropping a heavy leather binder onto the table with an authoritative *thud*. "Building security has been relieved by the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Arthur Vance, the managing partner, went white as a sheet. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private corporate closing!"
"This is an active federal crime scene, Mr. Vance," Klein replied coldly. "I suggest you take three steps back from that table and keep your hands where my agents can see them, unless you want to be indicted as an unindicted co-conspirator before the hour is out."
Arthur Vance backed away instantly, holding his hands up in surrender, completely abandoning his clients.
"Julian!" Evelyn hissed, turning her frantic, crazed glare onto her younger son. "Julian, tell them! Show them the contracts! You are the managing member! You signed the Delaware filings!"
Julian was hyperventilating, pressed against the glass window overlooking the highway, tears and snot streaming down his face.
"I can't, Mom!" Julian wailed hysterically. "They have Sterling! Daniel has the notary logs! They have the security footage from the alley! It's over, Mom! It's over!"
"Shut up, you cowardly little worm!" Evelyn lunged across the table toward Julian, her manicured fingers curling into claws, completely dropping any semblance of high-society poise. "I did this for you! You owed those Albanians three-quarters of a million dollars! They were going to slit your throat in your sleep! I built this plan to save your pathetic life!"
"Thank you, Mrs. Mercer," Klein said smoothly, signaling the FBI agents behind her. "We appreciate you confirming the extortion motive on an active federal wire recording."
Two FBI agents stepped forward, unholstering their handcuffs.
"Evelyn Mercer," Agent Miller announced, pulling her arms behind her back. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit interstate wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, felony assault on a pregnant person, and attempted human trafficking."
"Take your hands off me!" Evelyn screamed, thrashing wildly against the agents' grip, her immaculate hair falling into disarray, her face twisted into a mask of pure demonic rage. "Do you know who I am?! I am Evelyn Mercer! Daniel, tell them! Tell them to stop! I am your MOTHER!"
I walked over to where she was being pinned against the walnut table.
I looked into the eyes of the woman who gave birth to me—the woman who had looked at my pregnant wife, looked at the belly carrying my child, and saw nothing but a commodity to be sold off to pay for her son’s sins.
"You stopped being my mother," I said quietly, "the moment you laid hands on my family."
May you like
The steel handcuffs clicked shut around her wrists.
