Chapter 7 - Evelyn's Web of Lies

At 1230 hours, ninety minutes before the signing ceremony, my phone rang.
The caller ID displayed: *Mother*.
I pulled over to the shoulder of the Dulles Toll Road and hit speakerphone. Vance, who had connected remotely from the safehouse, was recording the entire call on a secure federal line linked to the United States Attorney’s Office.
"Daniel?" Evelyn’s voice was breathless, manicured to sound like a mother on the brink of devastating grief. "Daniel, thank God you answered! Where are you?"
"Driving toward Tysons Corner," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "What happened, Mother?"
A theatrical sob echoed through the speaker.
"It’s Maya, darling! Oh God, it's Maya! Dr. Harrison just called from the county medical center. A patrol unit found her car abandoned near the reservoir in Great Falls!"
I didn't say a word. I simply let the silence stretch, giving her enough rope to hang herself.
"She’s... Daniel, she’s had a complete psychological collapse," Evelyn wept convincingly. "She was found wandering near the water, screaming that people were trying to steal her baby. The police had to sedate her! They've admitted her to the psychiatric evaluation unit under an involuntary seventy-two-hour hold!"
"Which hospital, Mother?" I asked quietly.
"Inova Fairfax," she lied instantly, without missing a single beat. "Julian and I are on our way there right now to sign the family guardianship paperwork. The doctors said you shouldn't see her, Daniel. They said your uniform, your presence... it might trigger a violent episode. She doesn't recognize anyone."
"And the baby?"
"The baby is in distress," Evelyn whimpered. "Dr. Harrison is preparing for an emergency cesarean section. We have to be there to grant legal medical consent, Daniel. Because you weren't reachable, the probate court granted me emergency provisional conservatorship thirty minutes ago."
She had actually done it.
She had filed the fraudulent paperwork with a corrupt or misled family court magistrate, using Maya’s alleged "abandoned vehicle" (which Julian must have staged earlier) to strip my wife of her parental rights before our son was even born.
"Mother," I said, keeping my tone flat and calm.
"Yes, my sweet boy?"
"What about the Ironclad Hauling signing ceremony at two o'clock?"
Evelyn paused, and for a split second, the cold, calculating CEO broke through the grieving mother routine. "The attorneys from Vance & Preston are meeting us at the hospital private annex. Julian is going to execute the final syndication papers so the company accounts aren't frozen during this family tragedy. It’s the only way to ensure we have the funds to pay for Maya’s long-term psychiatric care."
"You thought of everything," I said.
"A mother always does, darling," she said softly. "Go back to the farmhouse. Rest. Julian and I will handle this nightmare. When you wake up, it will all be settled."
"I'll see you soon, Mother," I said, and disconnected the call.
On the encrypted line, Vance’s voice cut in. "Daniel, are you hearing this? The Assistant U.S. Attorney, Sarah Klein, is on the line right now. She just authorized federal interception warrants. We have Evelyn on wire fraud, medical falsification, attempted kidnapping, and extortion."
"Where is Maya?" I asked Vance.
"Safe in the safehouse with Dr. Chen," Vance replied. "She just finished eating. Her blood pressure has completely stabilized. Dr. Chen gave her a clean bill of health. She knows what Evelyn just tried to do."
"How did she take it?"
"She looked me in the eye," Vance said, "and she told me to give you this message: *'Finish it.'*"
A cold, razor-sharp smile touched my lips.
"Miller," I said, glancing at my teammate in the passenger seat.
"Boss?"
May you like
"Call the convoy," I said. "We're going to Tysons Corner."
