Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Coup

The boardroom on the sixty-fourth floor of the Sterling Tower was the pinnacle of corporate wealth and power.

A thirty-foot table made of solid Brazilian rosewood sat beneath a modern chandelier of smoked quartz. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered an unobstructed panoramic view of the New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty looking like a miniature figurine far below.

Seated around the table were the twelve members of the board of directors—seasoned titans of finance, former senators, and billionaire investors.

At the head of the table sat Victoria Sterling.

She had spent the early morning hours rebuilding her fortress. She wore an immaculate sapphire-blue Chanel suit, her hair styled to perfection, her face masked in high-coverage foundation to hide the pallor of the previous night’s humiliation. Around her neck hung a three-strand necklace of South Sea pearls.

She looked commanding, unyielding, and completely in control.

"Let us bring this meeting to order," Victoria announced, her voice ringing with absolute authority as she tapped her diamond-ringed hand on the rosewood table. "I know there have been... distasteful rumors circulating in the press this morning regarding an unfortunate domestic disturbance at my birthday gala last night."

The board members exchanged uncomfortable, guarded glances. Judge Bradley sat with his arms crossed, his face like thunder.

"Let me assure you all," Victoria continued smoothly, offering a practiced, patronizing smile. "My son Alexander has suffered a severe psychological relapse brought on by corporate fatigue. The woman he brought up—Lauren—is a deeply disturbed individual who abandoned this family years ago and has now resurfaced in an attempt to extort the Sterling legacy using their child as a prop. My legal team has already filed a restraining order, and we are handling the matter with the utmost discretion."

"Is that why your chauffeur called my chambers at two in the morning, Victoria?" Judge Bradley spoke up, his voice dripping with venom. "Claiming that you committed grand larceny and child abuse?"

Victoria’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Arthur is a disgruntled former employee suffering from cognitive decline, Bradley. He was fired on the spot last night. His fabrications carry zero legal weight."

She picked up the gavel.

"Now, we are here to discuss Resolution 409. The restructuring of the executive committee. In light of Alexander’s current mental instability, it is imperative that the board vote immediately to transfer all executive veto powers to me as Chairwoman. All in favor—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding crack that vibrated through the rosewood table.

Victoria froze, the gavel hovering an inch above the sounding block.

I walked into the boardroom.

I was flanked not by corporate lawyers, but by two special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, wearing dark suits with gold badges clipped to their belts, followed by David Cole and Arthur.

And walking behind Arthur, pale, sweating, and shaking like a leaf in a gale, was Richard Vance.

"Put the gavel down, Mother," I said, my voice echoing off the glass walls.

Victoria’s face cracked. The sapphire-blue facade shattered in an instant as her eyes locked onto her personal attorney.

"Richard?" she hissed, rising from her chair. "What is the meaning of this? Why are you with him?"

Richard Vance couldn't even look her in the eye. He stared at the carpet, clutching his leather briefcase to his chest like a shield.

"The meeting is over, Victoria," I said, walking to the foot of the table. I placed my hands flat on the polished wood and looked directly into the face of the woman who had tried to destroy my life. "Resolution 409 will not be voted on. In fact, there will never be another board vote under your leadership again."

"Alexander, you have lost your mind!" Victoria shrieked, slamming the gavel down. "Security! Remove these people from my boardroom immediately!"

The two private security guards Victoria had stationed at the door took half a step forward.

One of the FBI agents stepped smoothly in front of them, holding up a federal warrant. "FBI Special Agent Miller. Anyone who interferes with the execution of this federal arrest warrant will be charged with felony obstruction of justice. Stand down."

The security guards looked at the badge, looked at Victoria, and immediately backed out of the room, letting the doors swing shut behind them.

The board members gasped. Two of them stood up from their chairs in shock.

"Arrest warrant?" Victoria laughed, a high, hysterical sound that bordered on lunacy. "On what grounds? I built this company! I am Victoria Sterling!"

"On the grounds of sixty-two counts of federal wire fraud, sixteen counts of identity theft, criminal conspiracy, extortion, and the unlawful embezzlement of sixty-two million dollars from the Sterling corporate treasury," Agent Miller announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"That’s a lie! It’s an accounting error!" Victoria screamed, pointing wildly at me. "Alexander fabricated this! He’s trying to steal my company!"

"She told me to do it," Richard Vance’s trembling voice cut through her screams.

The room went completely dead.

Victoria spun toward Vance, her jaw dropping. "Richard... shut your mouth!"

"She told me to forge the divorce papers," Vance sobbed, the dam finally breaking as he pulled stacks of documents from his briefcase and threw them across the table. "She told me to forge Alexander’s signature on the proxy votes! She threatened to destroy my family if I didn't help her hide the sixty-two million in the Cayman accounts! She paid me eight hundred thousand dollars to keep Lauren and Sophia trapped in that basement so they could never tell Alexander the truth!"

"You coward!" Victoria lunged across the rosewood table, her fingers curled like claws, attempting to scratch Vance’s eyes out. "You pathetic little worm! I made you! I paid for your children's schools! I bought you!"

Agent Miller and his partner moved in with practiced speed.

Before Victoria could reach Vance, Miller grabbed her by the wrists, twisting her arms behind her back with a sharp, professional click of steel.

The handcuffs snapped shut over her delicate, diamond-braceleted wrists.

"Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest," Agent Miller recited, his voice completely indifferent to her status. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

"Get your filthy hands off me!" Victoria shrieked, thrashing against the agent’s grip. Her pearls snapped, scattering dozens of white spheres across the polished hardwood floor, bouncing and rolling under the feet of the horrified board members. "Do you know who I am? Bradley! Do something! Call the governor! Call the mayor!"

Judge Bradley looked at her, his expression cold as stone.

"I wouldn't call a dog catcher to save you, Victoria," Bradley said softly. "You let an eight-year-old child eat out of hotel garbage bins while you wore diamonds bought with her stolen money. You belong in a cage."

Victoria was dragged backward toward the boardroom doors. Her hair had come completely undone, hanging in wild, silver-streaked strands over her face. Her sapphire jacket was twisted, her face contorted into an ugly, unrecognizable mask of pure hatred.

As she reached the doorway, she locked eyes with me.

"Alexander!" she screamed, tears of rage finally cutting through her makeup. "I am your mother! You are my flesh and blood! You wouldn't exist without me! You will rot in hell for this! You will lose everything, just like your father did!"

I stood tall at the end of the table, watching her thrash against the federal agents.

"My father didn't lose everything, Victoria," I said, my voice steady, cold, and clear. "He escaped you. And today, so did we."

May you like

The heavy mahogany doors closed behind her, cutting off her screams forever.
