Chapter 7 - The Chauffeur's Testimony

By seven o'clock the following morning, the storm had passed, leaving Manhattan scrubbed clean, the sunrise painting the glass skyscrapers in brilliant shades of amber and rose.
Inside the Four Seasons penthouse, the atmosphere had transformed.
The sweet smell of warm cinnamon, fresh strawberries, and toasted brioche filled the air. A private chef I had brought in at sunrise was quietly working in the kitchen, preparing a feast that looked like something out of a fairy tale.
In the sunlit breakfast nook overlooking Central Park, Sophia was sitting in a plush velvet armchair, wearing a brand-new, butter-soft cashmere sweater and warm velvet leggings. Her tangled hair had been gently washed, brushed, and braided with silk ribbons by the private nurse.
In front of her sat a plate piled high with fluffy golden pancakes, fresh blueberries, and real maple syrup.
Beside her sat Lauren.
Lauren was wrapped in an ivory silk dressing gown. Her face was still terribly thin, her eyes still carrying the ghost of three years of sorrow, but for the first time since I had returned, the suffocating terror in her eyes had begun to recede. She held a cup of warm chamomile tea, her hands steady, watching her daughter eat.
Sophia took a tiny, hesitant bite of a pancake.
She paused, her eyes widening in disbelief, and then looked up at Lauren. "Mommy... it tastes like sunshine."
Lauren covered her mouth with her hand, a soft, choked laugh escaping her lips as tears spilled over her lashes. "Eat as much as you want, baby. We don't have to save it. You can eat until your tummy is full."
I stood in the arched doorway of the kitchen, leaning against the frame, watching them.
My heart swelled with a feeling so profound, so fiercely protective, that it felt like an awakening. For three years, my life had been an empty shell of spreadsheets, hotel rooms, and hollow corporate victories. I had thought I was building an empire for my family, while my real empire—the only one that ever mattered—was starving in a basement ten miles away.
"Alexander," Lauren called softly, noticing me.
I walked over, pulling up a chair beside them. I reached out and took Lauren’s hand, lacing my fingers through hers, while resting my other hand on Sophia’s head.
"Did you sleep, baby?" I asked Sophia.
Sophia nodded vigorously, her mouth smeared with maple syrup. "The bed is like a cloud, Daddy. It didn't make any creaking noises, and there weren't any water drops falling on my toes."
She reached out with her sticky fingers and touched the lapel of my clean suit. "Are you going to work, Daddy?"
"I have a meeting this morning, sweetheart," I said gently. "A very important meeting. And after that, I’m coming right back here, and we’re going to take you to buy every single toy, book, and dress you’ve ever wanted."
"I don't need toys," Sophia whispered, leaning her head against my arm. "I just want you and Mommy to stay."
"We’re staying," I promised, kissing the top of her head. "Forever."
Lauren looked into my eyes, her expression shifting into quiet apprehension. "Alexander... what are you going to do to Victoria today?"
"I’m not doing anything to her, Lauren," I said, my voice hardening slightly despite my attempt to stay gentle. "The law is going to do it. The truth is going to do it. She spent thirty years believing she was above the consequences of her cruelty. Today, she learns she is human."
The elevator chime rang softly in the foyer.
Arthur stepped into the living room, carrying a fresh, pressed garment bag and a leather folder containing Richard Vance’s signed, notarized fifteen-page confession, complete with transaction logs, audio recordings, and original forged deeds.
"The car is waiting downstairs, Mr. Sterling," Arthur said. "The board members have all arrived at the headquarters. Mrs. Sterling entered the building fifteen minutes ago. She has brought two private security details and her PR team."
"Did she?" I smiled coldly, standing up. "She thinks she’s walking into a coronation."
I turned back to Lauren, leaning down to press a deep, tender kiss to her lips. She held the back of my neck for a lingering moment, pouring all her love, her hope, and her trust into me.
"Go take our life back, Alexander," she whispered.
May you like
"Consider it done."
