Chapter 6 - The Flying Monkeys Assemble

The counter-offensive began on New Year’s Eve.

In psychology, there is a term for the people an abusive family system mobilizes when the primary scapegoat walks off the reservation: *flying monkeys.* Enablers, distant relatives, family friends, and guilt-peddlers who are weaponized to drag the runaway back into the pen.

By five o'clock on December 31st, my inbox had become a digital firing squad.

First came Aunt Clara—my mother’s younger sister from Ohio, a woman who hadn't spoken to me since Olivia was three years old.

**Aunt Clara (3:14 PM):** *Hannah Jane, I am appalled. Your mother called me in tears from the emergency clinic. Her blood pressure was 190 over 110! How could you do this to your baby sister during the holidays? Monica is a mother! Madison is a sweet, innocent child! Have you no shame? Whatever happened to family sticking together? I thought your grandmother raised you all better than this.*

Then came Uncle Robert, Daniel’s godfather:

**Uncle Robert (4:22 PM):** *Hannah, this is unchristian. You are blessed with immense financial wealth. The Bible tells us that to whom much is given, much is required. Casting your own sister out of her home is an abomination. Forgive her as the Lord forgave you.*

And finally, the crown jewel of family gaslighting: a mass group email sent by my brother Daniel to every single aunt, uncle, cousin, and second cousin on both sides of the family tree—thirty-four recipients in total.

**Subject: URGENT: Family Crisis – Hannah’s Actions Against Monica**

*To the entire Miller-Davis family,*

*It breaks my heart to write this, but our family is facing an unprecedented crisis. On Christmas Eve, over a minor misunderstanding between the children, Hannah exploded and walked out. Now, she has hired an aggressive corporate attorney to legally evict Monica, Greg, and little Madison from their family home in the dead of winter.*

*Monica and Greg have poured their blood, sweat, and tears into that home for five years. They have treated it as their own, made improvements, and given Madison a stable childhood. Hannah, who makes nearly $300k a year sitting on her ass writing software, is using her corporate wealth to destroy her sister out of pure jealousy because Monica has always had a warmer relationship with our parents.*

*Mom is currently on bed rest under doctor’s orders. Dad is beside himself.*

*If you believe in family, decency, and basic human morality, please reach out to Hannah and urge her to drop these eviction proceedings immediately. Don’t let corporate greed destroy our family.*

*— Daniel*

I stood in my kitchen, holding a glass of seltzer water, reading the email on my tablet.

Adam was chopping vegetables for dinner. When he saw my face go still, he stopped. “What did Daniel do?”

I turned the screen toward him.

He read it in silence. A dark, dangerous smile slowly crept across his lips.

“He really sent this to thirty-four people?” Adam asked.

“Thirty-four,” I confirmed. “Aunts, uncles, my cousins in Texas, my second cousins in Denver. People I haven't seen since my grandfather’s funeral.”

“He forgot one very important detail, didn't he?” Adam asked, setting down the chef's knife.

“He forgot that I am an engineer,” I said quietly. “And engineers don't operate on emotions. We operate on documentation.”

I sat down at the kitchen counter with my laptop.

For the next two hours, I didn't write an angry reply. I didn't insult Daniel’s intelligence. I didn't mention Monica’s cosmetic injections, or Greg’s phantom jobs, or the fact that Daniel still owed our parents $40,000 for his failed cross-fit gym.

Instead, I compiled an audit.

I took the certified Chester County Land Deed, highlighting my name in yellow.

I took the amortization ledger from the mortgage company, showing five years of consecutive monthly debits from my personal checking account totaling $169,549.20.

I took the Chester County Tax Assessor’s notice showing $14,200 in property taxes paid exclusively from my account.

I took the utility payment ledger showing the delinquent water bills and the thousands of dollars I had poured into emergency repairs while Monica vacationed in Cabo San Lucas.

I took the five-year bank transfer summary showing Monica’s total contribution over sixty months: **$4,800.00**.

Then, I attached the screenshots of the text messages from Christmas night:

Monica telling me: *“You’ve always been insanely jealous of Madison.”*

Madison mocking Olivia’s glasses and art.

Monica laughing and telling her to *“say it nicer.”*

I drafted my response to Daniel’s mass email. I hit **Reply All**.

*Dear Family,*

*Since Daniel has chosen to make our private family arrangement a matter of public debate among thirty-four relatives, I feel it is only fair that you have access to the complete financial and factual record rather than an emotional fiction.*

*Attached to this email, you will find five years of certified legal and financial documentation.*

*1. I am the sole legal owner of 742 Willow Creek Lane. Neither Monica nor Greg has ever held a financial interest, mortgage liability, or legal claim to the property.*

*2. Over the last five years, I have personally paid $169,549.20 in mortgage payments and property taxes to keep a roof over my sister’s head.*

*3. Over those same five years, Monica and Greg have contributed a cumulative total of $4,800—an average of eighty dollars per month.*

*4. The eviction was initiated not out of ‘greed,’ but because on Christmas Eve, Monica actively encouraged her daughter and Daniel’s children to publicly humiliate my eleven-year-old daughter, Olivia, while our parents sat by and watched.*

*I have supported Monica’s family for sixty months at great personal and financial expense. My reward for that charity has been the emotional abuse of my child in a home I paid for.*

*Daniel mentions that family must stick together and support one another in times of crisis. I agree with him completely.*

*Therefore, since Daniel, Aunt Clara, and Uncle Robert feel so passionately that Monica and Greg deserve a free, four-bedroom home, I am officially relinquishing the privilege of supporting them to the rest of the family.*

*I am sure Daniel has plenty of room in his five-bedroom house in Downingtown. Or perhaps Aunt Clara and Uncle Robert would like to pool their resources to pay Monica’s market rent of $3,400 a month starting February 1st.*

*The eviction of 742 Willow Creek Lane will proceed as scheduled on January 26th. The property will be placed on the open market for sale.*

*Happy New Year to you all.*

*— Hannah Miller*

I clicked **Send to All**.

The digital shockwave was instantaneous.

Within four minutes, Aunt Clara replied: *“Oh dear Lord. I had no idea. Monica told your mother she was paying half the mortgage!”*

Six minutes later, Cousin Mark from Austin chimed in: *“Wait, she lived there for five years for eighty bucks a month?! Are you kidding me? Daniel, you got some nerve sending that email, man.”*

By 7:30 PM, seven different aunts and cousins had “replied all,” either apologizing for jumping to conclusions or openly expressing their astonishment at Monica’s breathtaking audacity.

At 8:15 PM, my mother called.

I didn't answer.

She left a voicemail that was so high-pitched it sounded like feedback from a damaged microphone:

*“Hannah! How could you send our personal business to your Aunt Clara?! Do you know how humiliating this is?! Everyone is calling me! Uncle Robert called your father an enabler! You take that email back right now! You tell them you lied! You tell them Monica paid her share! You are destroying your sister’s reputation!”*

I deleted the voicemail without saving it.

May you like

Monica’s reputation hadn't been destroyed by me. It had simply been held up to the light of truth, and like all flimsy, decorative things built on lies, it had dissolved into ash.
