Chapter 5 - The Gates of Oak Creek

Flashing blue and red lights illuminated the stone pillars and wrought-iron arches of Oak Creek Estates. Rain was falling in earnest now, slicking the asphalt and hissing against the hot hoods of four county police cruisers parked bumper-to-bumper across the driveway.
Chief Donald Reynolds stood in the downpour, his yellow slicker glistening, his hand resting conspicuously on his service weapon.
"I am giving you armed trespassers sixty seconds to drop your weapons and exit the premises!" Reynolds bellowed through a megaphone. "You have no legal authority here! This is Oak Creek jurisdiction!"
Standing behind the reinforced wrought-iron gates were four Aegis contractors clad in matte-black ceramic armor, completely unmoving, their tactical rifles slung across their chests in low-ready posture.
Miller stepped forward, holding a ruggedized military tablet.
"Chief Reynolds," Miller said calmly over the estate’s intercom. "You might want to review the communication just dispatched to your personal terminal from the Federal District Court of the Western District."
Reynolds frowned, lowering the megaphone. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
His deputy, sitting inside the lead patrol car, suddenly rolled down his window, his face pale in the dashboard light. "Chief! You need to look at this right now! Dispatch just got a Priority-One federal override from the Attorney General’s office!"
Reynolds stormed over to the cruiser, leaning into the window. On the cruiser's mounted laptop, an encrypted audio file had automatically initialized.
A woman’s terrified, sobbing voice echoed through the vehicle's speakers:
“Julian, please! The door is locked! I’m bleeding—the baby is coming! Call an ambulance!”
Then came Julian Sterling’s slurred, mocking laughter, recorded clearly through Chloe’s smartwatch:
“Shut your mouth, Chloe! You think I’m calling an ambulance so you can divorce me and take half of what’s left? Die down there, you pathetic cow. That policy pays out double if the kid doesn't survive delivery. Happy Halloween.”
The sound of a heavy oak door slamming shut, followed by the slide of an iron bolt, rang out with sickening clarity.
Reynolds stood frozen, his hand dropping away from his firearm. The three deputies behind him stared in horrified silence.
Before Reynolds could speak, a black armored Suburban tore through the rain, drifting slightly as it rounded the bend before coming to a smooth halt directly beside the cruisers.
I stepped out into the rain.
I hadn't changed my clothes. The dark crimson stains of Chloe’s blood were stark against my military tactical shirt. I walked directly up to Reynolds, my eyes locked on his badge.
"Chief Reynolds," I said, my voice cutting through the drumming rain. "I am Colonel Marcus Vance, Special Operations Command, retired. Currently Director of Aegis Security Group under contract with the Department of Homeland Security."
Reynolds swallowed hard, the bluster completely evaporated from his stance. "Colonel... we... we didn't know the circumstances. Julian reported an armed kidnapping."
"Julian Sterling is an attempted murderer," I said, producing a laminated federal warrant issued thirty minutes prior by a federal judge who owed me his life after a diplomatic rescue in Bogotá. "This property is now an active federal crime scene involving cross-border insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate racketeering. You can either assist my team in executing this warrant, Chief Reynolds, or you can join Julian and Eleanor in federal detention for obstruction of justice. Choose right now."

Reynolds didn’t hesitate. He turned to his deputies.
"Cut the gate," Reynolds commanded. "Deputies, draw your weapons. We are entering to execute a felony arrest."
