Chapter 4 - The Breath of Life

"She fought like a soldier, Marcus," Hayes said, exhaling a long, shuddering breath. "She nearly arrested twice. We had to perform a total emergency hysterectomy to stop the pelvic bleeding."

The words felt like a physical hammer blow. "And the baby?"

Hayes looked up, and for the first time that night, the tight grimace around his mouth softened into something miraculous.

"A girl. Two pounds, eleven ounces. Her lungs are severely underdeveloped from the trauma, and she’s in a high-frequency incubator in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit right now. But she’s breathing on her own, Marcus. Your granddaughter is a fighter."

A shudder ran through my entire frame. I gripped Hayes’s shoulder with enough force to whiten my knuckles, lowering my head as the knot of terror in my chest finally uncoiled into pure, unadulterated resolve.

"Chloe?" I managed to ask.

"Stable. Critical, but stable. She’s in the Recovery ICU under continuous monitoring. You can see her for two minutes. Then she needs deep restorative sleep."

I followed Hayes through the pressurized airlock into the intensive care pod.

Chloe looked tiny in the vast, motorized hospital bed. Machines hummed around her in a steady, synchronized rhythm, tubes delivering vital fluids into her bruised arms. A purple contusion shaped like the heel of a dress shoe marred the pale skin near her hip bone.

Julian’s boot mark.

I pulled a chair to her bedside and took her fingers into my palm. Her eyes drifted open slowly, clouded by anesthesia, but as her gaze locked onto mine, a faint spark of consciousness ignited.

"Dad..." she murmured, her voice raw from the intubation tube.

"I’m right here, sweetheart. I’m not leaving."

"The... baby?"

"Her name is Maya," I said, my voice cracking slightly. "She’s in the nursery two doors down. She has your dark hair, Chloe. She’s strong. She’s going to make it."

A tear slipped from the corner of her eye, tracing through the surgical antiseptic on her cheek. "Julian... he locked it, Dad. I begged him. I told him the baby was coming... and he just laughed through the door. He said... he said I was worthless to him."

"He will never touch you again," I promised, leaning close, resting my forehead against her cold hand. "He will never speak your name. I am going to tear down everything he owns, piece by piece, until he pays for every second you spent on that concrete."

Her grip tightened weakly around my fingers. "Make him pay, Dad. Don't let them hide."

"Go to sleep, Chloe. Daddy’s on the clock."

Her eyes drifted shut as the pain medication pulled her under.

I stood up, walked out into the corridor, and pulled out my secure satellite phone.

"Vance," I addressed my Aegis Intelligence Director, David Vance—no relation to the corrupt lawyer, but a former NSA signals analyst who could crack a foreign bank vault from an encrypted laptop. "Give me the tactical picture at the Sterling estate."

"Marcus, things are heating up," David’s voice crackled through the earpiece. "Julian made contact with County Police Chief Donald Reynolds—one of Eleanor’s long-time country club cronies. Reynolds just pulled up to the estate gates with four cruiser units, demanding that our team stand down and open the perimeter."

"Is Reynolds aware of the evidence we secured?"

"Negative. Julian told him your team was a rogue private militia conducting an armed home invasion. Reynolds is threatening to breach our perimeter line."

"Put me on speaker with Miller at the gate," I ordered, stepping into the private elevator. "Tell Reynolds to check his phone in thirty seconds. I’m sending him a file."

"What file?"

"The dashcam audio from Chloe’s phone when Julian kicked her down the stairs. The cloud upload completed five minutes ago."
