Chapter 6 - The Iron Cage of Law

The red and blue flashing lights painted the grand limestone facade of the Ashbourne manor in lurid, violent colors. Four state trooper cruisers and an unmarked black SUV bearing the crest of the Department of Children and Family Services sat idling in the circular driveway.
Inside the grand library, the air was poisonous.
Detective Robert Vance—no relation to Edward, but an old crony of the Wells family—stood in the center of the Persian rug, clutching an emergency removal order stamped by a corrupt night-court judge. Flanking him was a stern-faced CPS agent named Agent Henderson, clutching a leather folder.
"Mr. Ashbourne, we have a sworn affidavit from Miss Miranda Wells," Detective Vance said, trying to puff out his chest beneath Kieran’s murderous glare. "She states that the nanny, Annie Mercer, has a history of erratic behavior, has been systematically alienating the child from her legal family, and physically assaulted Miss Wells when she attempted to safeguard Flora. The court has granted temporary emergency protective custody of Flora to her legal maternal aunt pending a full investigation."
"Maternal aunt?" Kieran said, his voice a lethal, low hum. "My wife’s sister lives in London and hasn't spoken to Miranda Wells in three years. You’re talking about Miranda’s cousin, who happens to sit on the board of your police union."
"The court order is legally binding, Kieran," a sharp, venomous voice rang out from the doorway.
Miranda walked in. She was wearing an oversized beige trench coat, a designer silk scarf wrapped around her neck, and a pair of dark sunglasses that she dramatically removed to reveal a faint, theatrically applied red mark on her cheekbone. Behind her stood two of New York’s most predatory defense attorneys.
"You should have taken the deal, Kieran," Miranda sneered, stepping into the warm light of the library. "Annie Mercer is a violent criminal. The police will take Flora tonight for her own safety, and Annie is leaving this house in handcuffs. If you interfere, you’ll be arrested for obstruction of justice."
From the top of the spiral stairs in the corner of the library, Annie appeared, holding Flora tightly against her chest. Annie’s face was pale, the purple bruise glowing brightly under the chandelier, but her spine was straight as a steel rod.
"Don't do this, Miranda," Annie said, her voice clear and resonant. "Leave Flora out of your hatred for me."
"Shut up, you gutter trash!" Miranda snapped, losing her composure for a split second. "Detective, arrest her! She’s the one who hit me! She threw me against the sideboard!"
"Agent Henderson, step forward and take the child," Detective Vance ordered, reaching for his handcuffs.
"Take one more step," Kieran said, "and you will spend the rest of your natural life in federal prison."
Detective Vance scoffed. "You can't threaten a police officer, Ashbourne! I don't care how many billions you have!"
"I don't need billions to destroy you, Vance," Kieran said calmly, pulling a slim titanium flash drive from his pocket and tossing it onto the mahogany desk. "I only need the truth."
Kieran hit a button on his desk remote. The massive 85-inch presentation screen on the wall flickered to life.
Miranda’s smug smile instantly froze.
The screen displayed four crystal-clear, 4K camera angles of the Ashbourne dining room from earlier that evening.
"What is that?" Miranda whispered, her voice suddenly thin.
"When I took custody of Flora after Victoria died," Kieran said, stepping around the desk, his eyes fixed on Miranda like a tiger stalking an injured deer, "I installed military-grade, hidden 360-degree biometric surveillance in every single public room of this estate. It records continuously to an encrypted server in Switzerland. Not even Edward has the master decryption key. Only I do."
Kieran pressed play.
The high-definition audio filled the library with sickening clarity.
On the screen, Miranda was seen lunging across the table, grabbing Annie’s hair, and forcing her hands behind the wooden dining chair. The speakers broadcast the horrific sound of the first slap.
*CRACK.*
On screen, Miranda’s voice snarled: *"Count, Flora! Count every time I strike this miserable peasant, or the next one lands on your mouth!"*
*CRACK.*
*“One…”* little Flora’s voice sobbed on the recording.
*CRACK.*
*“Two…”*
The room plunged into dead, horrified silence. Detective Vance’s hand froze above his holster. Agent Henderson gasped, dropping her leather folder onto the floor, her eyes widening in pure revulsion as the video continued to play until the horrifying count of ten was completed, followed by Miranda spitting at Annie’s feet.
Annie looked away, tears sliding down her cheeks. Kieran paused the video on a freeze-frame of Miranda’s face twisted in psychopathic, manic cruelty.
"Now," Kieran said, turning slowly toward Detective Vance and Agent Henderson. "Who, exactly, is committing child endangerment, felony assault, and filing a false police report?"
Miranda was shaking uncontrollably. "No... no, that... that’s an illegal wiretap! That video is inadmissible! It was doctored! Kieran used AI—"
"It is fully timestamped, digitally signed, and legally recorded on my private property with signage posted at every entrance," Kieran said coldly. "And unfortunately for you, Miranda... the state prosecutor is currently watching the live stream right now."
At that exact moment, the heavy library doors burst open.
A dozen federal marshals in tactical gear poured into the room, their weapons raised. Leading them was United States Attorney Marcus Vance—Robert Vance’s superior and fiercest rival.
"Miranda Wells," Marcus barked, holding up a federal arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for aggravated assault, domestic battery of an employee, witness tampering, and coercive child abuse. Detective Vance, hand over your badge and weapon. You are suspended pending an immediate federal corruption probe."
Miranda let out a blood-curdling shriek as two federal agents forced her hands behind her back, ratcheting cold steel handcuffs around her wrists. "Julian! Call my father! Kieran, you bastard, I will kill you! I will kill that nanny!"

"Get her out of my sight," Kieran said, not even looking at her as she was dragged, screaming and kicking, through the double doors into the pouring rain.
