Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Playroom

Dr. Evans finished applying the specialized medical adhesive to the small laceration beneath Annie’s eye. The elderly physician packed his leather bag with an expression of grave solemnity.

"The swelling will peak in forty-eight hours, Miss Mercer," Dr. Evans said quietly. "No fractured facial bones, thank heavens, but there is soft tissue trauma. As for Flora... her vitals are stable, but psychologically, she is in acute shock. She needs stability. Familiarity."

"She needs Annie," Kieran’s voice came from the bedroom doorway. He had changed into a dark cashmere sweater, looking every bit the ruthless protector who had just dismantled an empire downstairs.

"Indeed," Dr. Evans agreed, nodding respectfully to his employer. "I've left a mild sedative for Miss Mercer, but she refused it. Said she wanted to stay awake with Flora."

"Thank you, Doctor. Edward will see you out."

Once the door closed, Kieran walked to the edge of the bed. Flora had finally fallen into an exhausted sleep, her small fingers still hooked firmly into Annie’s sweater. Annie was sitting against the headboard, her eyes heavy with fatigue, yet she refused to let go of the sleeping child.

"You should sleep," Kieran murmured, sitting on the edge of the mattress.

"I can't," Annie whispered. "Every time I close my eyes, I hear Miranda’s voice. I hear her telling Flora that she’s worthless. Flora is only six, Kieran. She lost her mother when she was a baby. She spent years feeling like she had a hole in her heart... and that monster tried to dig it deeper."

Kieran flinched at the mention of his late wife. For years, the memory of Victoria had been an untouchable monument of grief. But as he looked at Annie—at the raw, unselfish fury burning in her eyes on behalf of his daughter—he realized Victoria’s memory had become a tomb, while Annie was the living, beating soul this house had lacked for half a decade.

"Why didn't you hit her back?" Kieran asked suddenly.

Annie looked at him, surprised. "What?"

"You could have defended yourself," Kieran said, his gaze intense, drilling into hers. "You’re strong, Annie. I’ve seen you carry bags of soil across the garden that made the groundskeeper sweat. You could have broken Miranda’s nose with one punch. Why did you let her hit you?"

Tears spiked in Annie’s eyes. She swallowed hard, looking down at Flora’s peaceful, sleeping face.

"Because Flora was in the room," Annie whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "If I fought back... if it turned into a brawl... Miranda was holding a glass vase. When she swung the first time, Flora screamed and tried to step between us. I... I threw myself over Flora to shield her. I let Miranda hit me because every blow that landed on my face was a blow that didn't touch your daughter."

Kieran stopped breathing.

The realization hit him like a physical blow to the sternum. Miranda had attacked, and Annie had chosen to become a human shield for a child that wasn't even her own flesh and blood.

He reached out, his large, warm hand cupping the side of her neck, his fingers tangling into the soft hair at the base of her skull. It was an intensely intimate gesture, one that shattered the boundary between master and servant permanently.

"You are an extraordinary woman, Annie Mercer," Kieran said, his voice thick with an emotion he hadn't permitted himself to feel in six years. "And I have been completely blind."

Annie’s breath caught. She felt the heat radiating from his palm, the magnetic pull of his presence. "Mr. Ashbourne—"

"Kieran," he corrected softly. "Call me Kieran."

Before she could respond, the security monitor mounted discreetly on the wall beside the fireplace flared to life. Edward’s face appeared on the high-definition screen, his expression grim.

*"Sir. We’ve intercepted an emergency dispatch on the police scanner. Miranda Wells just walked into the 4th Precinct with two high-profile criminal defense lawyers. She’s claiming Annie Mercer attempted to kidnap Flora, and that when Miranda intervened, Annie attacked her. They’ve obtained an emergency child protective warrant. The state police are en route to the estate right now."*
