Chapter 68 - The Absolute Zero Protocol

The pitch-black darkness of the sub-level bunker lasted only a heartbeat before the emergency battery backups kicked in, casting a sickly, jaundiced yellow glow across the flooded room. The jolt had ruptured the main steam lines running along the facility's low ceiling, filling the air with a blinding, scalding hiss of pressurized vapor that instantly mixed with the knee-deep freezing water, creating a suffocating, swamp-like atmosphere of extreme contrasts.
"Move! Form a perimeter!" Colonel Sterling’s voice cut through the hiss of the steam, sounding suddenly sharp and desperate as the stability of the underground complex began to groan under the stress of an unrecorded structural failure.
I used the cover of the dense, white vapor to shove Julianna and Charles further behind the heavy steel table, my boots sliding across the slick concrete. My military training screamed at me to maintain tactical awareness, but the physical environment was deteriorating by the second. The temperature inside the bunker was plummeting rapidly as the automated emergency coolant systems, triggered by the generator failure, began dumping liquid nitrogen into the sub-levels to prevent core server meltdown.
"Ethan... it's freezing... I can't feel my hands..." Julianna wept quietly, her teeth chattering so violently she could barely form the words. Charles was slumped against her shoulder, completely catatonic, his lips turning a pale, frightening shade of blue as the mist froze into delicate, sharp crystals along his graying hair.
Across the room, through the swirling haze of steam and yellow light, I spotted Sterling and his operators frantically working a manual override panel set into the reinforced concrete wall. Sparks showered from the console as Sterling slammed his fist against the emergency release lever, trying to force the heavy blast doors back open before the cryogenic coolant flooded their side of the sector.
"The vault is freezing over, Colonel!" one of the tactical grunts yelled, his voice cracking with panic. "At this rate, the sub-level seals are going to lock permanently in under three minutes!"
"I don't care about the seals! Find the Hayes kid and strip that drive off his body!" Sterling roared back, his face twisted in a mask of pure fury as he whipped his pistol around, scanning the misty room for my position.
I didn't wait for them to close the distance. Slipping the waterproof hard drive case deeper into the secure inner pocket of my tactical vest, I raised my carbine and fired three calculated, concussive rounds directly into the main electrical junction box hanging above Sterling’s head.
*CRACK-SPARK-BOOM.*
A blinding shower of white-hot electrical sparks exploded downward, plunging that half of the room into total darkness and sending Sterling and his men scrambling for cover as live, high-voltage cables thrashed wildly through the freezing water like angry serpents. In the sudden chaos, alarms shrieked a frantic, broken rhythm, and the heavy metal ceiling panels began to groan and buckle above us.
"Grab the old man!" I yelled to Julianna, hooking my arm beneath Charles’s dead weight and hauling him upright.

We didn't have a choice anymore. The only way out of the sinking, freezing tomb was straight down—toward the dark, unmapped maintenance tunnels yawning beneath the floor grates.
