Chapter 64 - The Carson City Black Site

The Black Hawk slammed down onto the reinforced concrete landing pad of the Carson City federal holding facility with a bone-jarring thud that rattled every tooth in my head. Before the skids had even settled, the side door was thrown open by heavily armed tactical police wearing unbadged grey combat armor.

"Out! Everybody out! Hands where we can see them!" a harsh voice shouted over the screaming whine of the cooling turbine engines.

I grabbed my carbine, slung it across my chest, and hauled Charles up by his arm while nudging Julianna toward the open door. The biting wind of the high desert plateau whipped across the tarmac, carrying the sharp scent of ozone and jet fuel.

We were herded at gunpoint across the freezing concrete toward a low-slung, windowless bunker of reinforced concrete surrounded by triple-stacked rolls of razor wire and automated security turrets. There were no flags, no signs, no official seals—just a heavy steel blast door marked only with a yellow stencil reading *FACILITY 9-B*.

Inside, the environment was sterile, clinical, and dead silent. The walls were painted a dismal, institutional grey, lit by harsh overhead fluorescent tubes that hummed with a low, nerve-fraying frequency.

We were shoved into a stark interrogation room dominated by a heavy steel table bolted to the floor and two bolted-down steel chairs. Charles collapsed immediately into one of the chairs, his head in his hands, shivering violently. Julianna paced back and forth like a caged animal, her manicured nails digging into her palms.

"This is illegal!" Julianna shrieked, turning on the federal guard stationed by the heavy door. "Do you know who my father is? Do you know what kind of legal team we can afford? My family built half the commercial infrastructure in this county!"

"Your family is currently classified as collateral assets in an ongoing federal counter-intelligence investigation, Ms. Hayes," a calm, chillingly polite voice echoed from the doorway.

We all turned.

Stepping into the harsh fluorescent light was a woman in a tailored charcoal-grey suit, her dark hair pulled back into a severe bun. She carried a slim leather portfolio under one arm and wore an expression of absolute, unfeeling authority. Behind her stood two Division Nine operatives with their assault rifles held at the low-ready.

"Director Sterling," I said, recognizing the name from the encrypted clearance logs I had scavenged off the Vanguard contractor back at the lake. "I didn't figure you'd show your face in a local holding pen."

Director Sterling stepped up to the steel table, placing her palms flat against the cold metal and leaning in slightly. Her eyes were like shards of broken glass—sharp, calculating, and devoid of warmth.

"Commander Hayes," she said softly. "You have proven to be an extraordinarily persistent thorn in the side of national security. You spent five years living a quiet, comfortable life on a disability pension we arranged for you, and yet you couldn't resist playing detective the moment your father decided to sell off a piece of real estate."

"That real estate was bought with stolen blood money used to cover up an illegal black-site operation in the South China Sea," I shot back, stepping between her and Charles. "Vance used my name as a straw buyer to launder millions. That’s not national security, Director. That’s treason for profit."

Sterling didn't blink. She smiled—a thin, paper-dry movement of her lips. "Treason, Commander, is a matter of perspective. Admiral Vance was securing critical infrastructure for the Pacific Defense Initiative. The funds used to purchase your Lake Tahoe villa were simply... allocated from dormant accounts."

May you like

She reached across the table, her gaze locking onto the waterproof hard drive case still strapped securely beneath the tactical harness on my chest.

"Now," Sterling said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You are going to hand over that drive, Commander. You are going to sign a full non-disclosure agreement acknowledging that your property seizure was a routine eminent domain exercise for national defense. And in exchange, your father and sister will walk out of this facility tonight with their lives and their remaining assets intact."
