Chapter 7 - The Shadow in the Park

The Lincoln Park Conservatory was warm, humid, and bursting with exotic tropical ferns and towering palm trees. Rain drummed loudly against the glass dome high above.
Anna held Leo’s small hand as the boy marveled at the giant koi fish swimming in the indoor pond.
"Look, Mommy! Big orange fish!" Leo squealed, pressing his nose against the stone railing.
"I see it, my brave explorer," Anna smiled, running her fingers through his dark curls.
Being around Leo was the only time Anna felt whole. The burns on her back and ribs still ached when the weather turned cold, but one smile from her son erased every scar. She had returned to Chicago not for revenge, but to claim the Bennett inheritance that belonged to Leo by birthright, ensuring he would never depend on a single cent of Moretti blood money.
"Mrs. Bennett?"
Anna’s bodyguard, Thomas, stepped forward cautiously from the pathway. "We have a problem."
Anna immediately pulled Leo behind her legs. "What is it?"
"Two vehicles just boxed in our driver outside on Stockton Drive. Four men entered through the south pavilion. They aren't Moretti’s people."
Anna’s heart plunged into her stomach. "Who are they?"
"The Miami cartel," Thomas murmured, drawing his concealed firearm. "Sophia Carter’s creditors. They know she was arrested an hour ago. They know the Moretti accounts are frozen for the investigation. They’re looking for collateral."
Before Thomas could finish his sentence, the heavy wooden doors of the palm pavilion were kicked open.
Four men in heavy raincoats strode in, their hands tucked into their pockets. The lead man, a scarred enforcer with cold, dead eyes, locked his gaze onto Leo.
"Anna Bennett," the man called out, his voice echoing under the glass dome. "Your husband’s little side piece owed my boss six million dollars. Sophia doesn't have it. Vincent Moretti’s assets are under federal audit. But we hear Julian Sterling’s nephew is worth ten times that."
"Thomas, take Leo and run," Anna whispered frantically, her voice trembling.
"Nobody moves," the enforcer barked, pulling a silenced submachine gun from beneath his coat.
Visitors screamed, ducking behind stone benches and concrete planters as panic erupted across the conservatory. Thomas raised his weapon to return fire, but a shot from the second enforcer caught him in the shoulder, sending him crashing into the fern beds.
Anna was trapped.
She dropped to her knees, wrapping her entire body over Leo, shielding him with her flesh, just as she had done in the burning cabin three years ago.
"Mommy! Mommy!" Leo sobbed, terrified by the gunfire.
"Close your eyes, Leo! Keep your eyes closed, Mommy has you!" Anna screamed, bracing for the impact of a bullet.
"Grab the kid," the cartel leader ordered, stepping toward them.
Suddenly, a glass side door shattered inward in an explosion of crystalline shards.
A dark figure burst through the opening like a force of pure nature.
Vincent Moretti.
He didn't hesitate. He didn't negotiate.
Vincent tackled the nearest gunman into a massive stone planter, the sickening crack of breaking bone echoing through the humid air. Before the second gunman could turn his weapon, Vincent snatched the fallen man’s pistol, firing two precise, lethal shots that dropped the threat instantly.
"Kill him!" the cartel leader roared, pivoting his weapon toward Vincent.
Vincent didn't dive for cover.
He looked across the pathway. He saw Anna huddled on the damp concrete. He saw her body wrapped protectively around their son.
*Three years ago, he had stepped onto the emergency slide.*
*Three years ago, he had let go of her hand.*
*Not today.*
*Not ever again.*
Vincent didn't retreat. He sprinted directly into the line of fire, throwing his entire body between the cartel leader’s gun and the woman he loved.
*Crack. Crack.*
Two heavy caliber rounds tore through Vincent’s chest and abdomen.
The impact slammed him backward, knocking the air from his lungs in a spray of scarlet, but Vincent refused to fall. Using the last ounce of adrenaline in his dying body, he raised his weapon and emptied the magazine into the cartel leader’s chest.
The enforcer collapsed into the koi pond, staining the clear water red.

Silence fell over the conservatory, broken only by the sound of the rain against the shattered roof and Leo’s muffled weeping.
