Chapter 7 - The Uncovering

While peace was taking root inside the walls of Westbrook Manor, the storm outside was escalating toward its climax.

Julian Mercer was not a man who conceded defeat gracefully. Stripped of the lucrative Westbrook joint venture and facing mounting interest on his commercial loans, he did what all desperate predators do: he went for total destruction.

On Tuesday morning, Nathan walked into my study without knocking. His tie was loose, his sleeves rolled up, and his expression was a mix of exhaustion and predatory triumph.

He dropped a three-inch thick binder onto my mahogany desk.

"We have them, Caleb," Nathan said, leaning over the desk. "All of them. Sloane, Julian, and Arthur Pendelton."

I closed the logistics report I was reviewing. "Give me the short version."

"Two years ago, Sloane established the 'Mercer Children’s Hope Foundation,'" Nathan explained, tapping the binder. "A tax-exempt charity ostensibly created to fund pediatric medical procedures for low-income families in Connecticut. High society gave millions. You personally donated five hundred thousand dollars at Sloane’s request last Christmas."

"Where did the money actually go?"

Nathan pulled out a bank ledger with yellow-highlighted rows. "Seventy percent of the funds were funneled into shell corporations registered in Delaware, which were then used to pay off the debt on Julian’s failing commercial developments. The other thirty percent? Sloane used it for private jet charters, couture gowns, and luxury hotel suites in Paris and St. Moritz."

I stared at the figures. "She was stealing money meant for sick children."

"Worse," Nathan said, his eyes darkening. "We found the application files. Guess who applied to the Mercer Children’s Hope Foundation eighteen months ago for assistance with Lily’s pediatric pulmonary treatments when she had pneumonia?"

A cold, lethal stillness settled over me. "Grace."

"Grace," Nathan confirmed. "Sloane personally reviewed the application. She wrote 'DENIED – APPLICANT EMPLOYED IN PRIVATE DOMESTIC SERVICE' across the front page, and then used five thousand dollars from the charity account that exact same afternoon to buy a diamond tennis bracelet at Harry Winston."

I stood up slowly from my desk. The rage inside me was no longer a fire; it was absolute zero. It was the kind of cold, calculated fury that reshaped industries and broke empires.

"Where are they tonight?" I asked.

"The Connecticut Society Winter Gala at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford," Nathan replied. "Seven o’clock. Julian is being presented with the 'Civic Developer of the Year' award. Sloane is slated to give the introductory speech on behalf of the Mercer Foundation. They’re using the event as a massive PR counter-attack to rehabilitate their reputation after your birthday party."

"Who is attending?"

"Every major donor, the state attorney general, three federal judges, and the press corps."

I walked over to the tall windows, looking out at the gardens. Down on the lawn, bundled in a pink winter coat, Lily was chasing falling oak leaves, her joyful laughter floating through the crisp November air. Grace stood nearby, watching her daughter with a peaceful, radiant smile.

"Nathan," I said, turning back to my partner.

"Yeah?"

"Call the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut. Tell him I have a federal wire fraud and charity embezzlement dossier that requires his immediate personal attention."

"And then?" Nathan asked, an eager glint in his eye.

"And then arrange my car," I replied. "I believe it’s time I attended another party."
