Chapter 7 - The Line in the Sand

"Colonel Miller," Aldrich said, pointing a shaking finger directly at Jo Merrick. "There she is. She has breached a secure intensive care unit after being formally terminated and barred from this facility. She has committed another unauthorized surgical invasion on a pediatric patient. Arrest her."
The Marine Lieutenant Colonel stepped forward, his eyes scanning the room. He saw the drill, the blood bag, the frantic nurses, and the little boy lying on the bed surrounded by empty syringes.
"Ma'am," the Colonel began, reaching for his handcuffs. "Step away from the—"
"Colonel Miller, hold your position," Daniel Brandt commanded.
Daniel stepped between the Marine and Jo. He pulled an official, gold-stamped identification card from his breast pocket and held it two inches from the Colonel’s nose.
"Captain Daniel Brandt, Commanding Officer, SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One," Daniel stated, his voice ringing with absolute, unimpeachable authority. "Under Department of Defense Directive 6000.14, Patient Rights and Quality Healthcare in the Military Health System, as the legal guardian of an active-duty dependent under critical life-threat conditions, I have invoked Operational Emergency Command Override."
Aldrich turned purple. "There is no such thing as an operational override in a medical facility, you arrogant SEAL—"
"There is when the facility commander is criminally negligent!" Daniel roared, taking a step toward Aldrich that caused the two Masters-at-Arms to instinctively back up. "My son has an active abdominal bleed that was missed because this hospital’s leadership cut the weekend pediatric trauma surgical staff to save operational budget!"
"That is a lie!" Aldrich spat.
"It’s not a lie," Dr. Kyle Apprentice said, stepping forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Daniel.
Aldrich looked at the resident as if he had been struck with an axe. "Apprentice, shut your mouth!"
"No, sir. I won't," Apprentice said clearly, looking directly at the Marine Provost Marshal. "Colonel Miller, Captain Aldrich falsified the triage staffing logs this morning. He sent the pediatric trauma surgical team home on an on-call status to meet his administrative cost-efficiency bonus for the fiscal quarter. He knew we had no active pediatric surgeon in-house tonight. When this boy crashed, Nurse Merrick didn't breach protocol—she saved this child’s life twice in two hours while Captain Aldrich was busy trying to cover his administrative liability."
The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
Colonel Miller looked at Apprentice. Then he looked at Aldrich, whose eyes were darting around the room like a trapped animal. Finally, Miller looked at Jo Merrick, who was standing calmly beside the gurney, her hand never leaving Owen’s pulse.
"Nurse Merrick," Colonel Miller said, his tone shifting. "Can you stabilize this child until the surgeon arrives?"
"No, sir," Jo said plainly. "His spleen is completely shattered. If he stays in this bed, the blood will dilute his clotting factors, he’ll go into disseminated intravascular coagulation, and he will arrest again in eight minutes. He needs an operating room, and he needs an exploratory laparotomy right now."
"We don't have a pediatric general surgeon on deck!" Apprentice cried.
"We have an adult general surgeon on call in the main OR," Jo said, looking directly into Apprentice’s eyes. "Dr. Marcus is downstairs finishing an appendectomy. He has twenty years of trauma experience, but he hasn't operated on a child in a decade. If you assist him, Kyle, and I run the trauma field... we can clamp that splenic artery before Owen bleeds out."
Apprentice swallowed hard. "I’ve never assisted on a pediatric splenectomy."
"I have," Jo said.
She turned to Colonel Miller. "Colonel, you can arrest me the second this boy's spleen is in a specimen bucket. But if you stop me from wheeling him into that elevator right now, you are going to watch a nine-year-old boy die on this floor."
Colonel Miller looked at the monitor. He saw the fading pink on Owen’s lips. He looked at Ethan, who was standing quietly in the corner, his small hands raised in a frozen sign:
*Help.*
Colonel Miller stepped back and turned to his four armed Masters-at-Arms.
"Detail," Miller barked. "Clear the hallway. Lock down the express elevator to the main surgical suite. Escort this team to OR Three immediately."
"Colonel, what are you doing?!" Aldrich screamed, lunging forward. "I am the ranking medical officer on this base! I forbid this!"
Colonel Miller stepped directly into Aldrich’s chest, using his forearm to shove the doctor hard against the wall. "Captain Aldrich, you are relieved of your clinical duties pending an immediate inquiry by the Inspector General. If you take another step toward that child, I will have you cuffed to the lobby bench where you left these boys to die."
Daniel grabbed the head of Owen’s gurney. Apprentice grabbed the foot.
"Let's move!" Jo shouted.
May you like
They surged into the hallway, the gurney wheels screaming against the linoleum, racing toward the operating room under the protective escort of armed Marines, while Captain Raymond Aldrich stood alone in the wreckage of his empire.
