Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Dante didn't remember crossing the floor. He only knew that the glass in his hand had been shoved onto a passing waiter’s tray, and his long, predatory strides were cutting through the crowd like an icebreaker through a frozen lake.

"Claire!"

His rough, gravelly voice cut through the soft chamber music near the VIP terrace.

Several state senators and international investors glanced over in surprise. Julian Vance didn't flinch. He slowly turned, placing a protective, possessive hand at the small of Claire’s back, his expression cool, polite, and thoroughly unimpressed.

Claire turned gracefully, holding a glass of sparkling water with lime.

"Yes?" she said, her voice smooth as silk.

Dante stood three feet away from her, his chest heaving as if he had run a marathon. Up close, the transformation was even more terrifying. She smelled of French citrus and white tea—not the jasmine of his past. Her posture was straight, confident, backed by a fortune and a name that made his mafia syndicate look like street thugs.

"Claire," Dante choked out, his eyes desperately scanning every line of her face. "You... you came back."

"I am accompanying my husband on business," Claire replied evenly, not a single flicker of hesitation in her eyes. "Mr. Moretti, isn't it? I believe you know Julian Vance."

*Mr. Moretti.*

The words felt like a serrated blade sawing through Dante's ribs.

Julian stepped forward slightly, extending a large, manicured hand. "Moretti. I’ve read your syndicate’s commercial balance sheets. Messy operations. High overhead, declining margins on the south Strip. We’ll be acquiring your logistics corridor by the third quarter."

Dante didn't look at Julian’s hand. He kept his feral gaze locked on Claire.

"We need to talk," Dante snarled, stepping closer, his old habits of intimidation flaring up. "Privately. Right fucking now, Claire."

Before Dante could take another half-step, two men in dark gray suits materialized on either side of Julian—not local casino bouncers, but former British Special Air Service private security, their hands resting loosely near their jackets.

Julian didn't even shift his stance. He looked down at Dante with pure, amused condescension.

"You are speaking to Lady Vance, Moretti," Julian said, his English voice dropping to a low, lethal baritone that carried unmistakable authority. "You will lower your tone, you will step back, or my security will remove you from this building through the service elevators in pieces. Am I clear?"

"She was my wife!" Dante roared, causing a nearby circle of socialites to gasp.

"She was your victim," Julian corrected coldly. "Now she is my wife, the mother of my son, and the co-owner of everything you are about to lose."

At that moment, Lily and Eleanor scurried through the crowd, panting.

"Claire!" Lily cried, her voice high and desperate. "Claire, it’s really you! Oh God, Claire, please, we didn't know where you went! You broke my heart when you disappeared!"

Claire looked down at her younger sister.

Lily looked worn down, desperate, clutching a sequined purse like a shield.

"Lily," Claire said calmly. "I see you managed to keep the emerald earrings. They were always a bit gaudy on you, but I suppose they match your complexion tonight."

"Claire, how could you do this?" Eleanor chimed in, trying to put on her haughty, matriarchal tone, though her hands were shaking. "You left your family! You abandoned your sister after she had a baby! Do you have any idea how much we suffered? The shame? The gossip?"

Claire took a slow sip of her sparkling water. She looked at Eleanor, then at Lily, and finally at Dante.

"Suffered?" Claire asked, her lips curving into a small, chilling smile. "You had Dante’s penthouse, Eleanor. You had his black credit cards. And Lily had my husband in her bed. From what I recall, you received exactly what you bargained for."

"Claire, please," Lily sobbed, tears ruining her heavy mascara. "Isabella is your niece! Don't you even care about her? She asks about her Aunt Claire!"

"I have a son," Claire said softly, her gaze hardening into diamonds. "His name is Leo. He has an honorable father, a clean legacy, and a mother who protects him. Isabella is Dante’s responsibility. Whatever sins you two committed to bring her into this world are yours to explain to her when she grows up. Do not ever speak my name to that child again."

"Claire—" Dante reached for her wrist, desperate, blind with an agonizing regret that was tearing his chest apart.

Julian intercepted Dante's hand in mid-air.

Julian’s grip was like an iron vise, twisting Dante’s wrist outward just enough to apply excruciating pressure to the joint without making a loud scene. Dante gritted his teeth, his jaw bulging, shocked by the sheer physical power of the aristocrat before him.

"Touch her," Julian whispered directly into Dante’s ear, "and I will buy every loan note your family owes to the Chicago banks by sunrise tomorrow and call them all due at noon. You will be dead in a gutter before the weekend, Moretti. Walk away."

Julian released him.

May you like

Claire didn't even look back. She slipped her hand into Julian’s arm, and together, they turned their backs on the three of them, gliding toward the governor’s private table as the entire room watched in stunned, breathless silence.
