Chapter 6 - The Long Night

Red emergency lights instantly bathed the master suite in an eerie crimson glow.

"Don Moretti!" Dr. Rossi shouted, scrambling to pack his medical equipment.

Luca stood up smoothly, transferring the sleeping Grace into Emily’s arms. "Take her into the bathroom. Lock the reinforced steel door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Marco."

"Luca, what's happening?" Emily’s voice was laced with terror as she clutched Grace tightly.

"The Bellinis didn't wait for morning," Luca said, pulling a second weapon from beneath the bedside table—a short-barreled tactical submachine gun. "Salvatore sent his hit squads. They think taking out this house ends the Moretti line."

A volley of automatic gunfire erupted from the front gates down below, the sharp *crack-crack-crack* echoing off the marble courtyard.

"Emily, go! Now!" Luca ordered.

Emily didn't hesitate. She bolted into the massive master bathroom, slammed the heavy steel-reinforced door shut, and turned the heavy deadbolt. Grace woke up, startled by the noise, and began to cry softly against Emily’s neck.

"Shh, baby, Mommy’s here," Emily whispered in the pitch-dark bathroom, sitting down on the marble floor with her back against the reinforced wall. "We're safe. Daddy is right outside. Daddy won't let anyone hurt us."

Outside in the suite, Luca tapped his tactical earpiece. "Status!"

"Front gates breached by three black SUVs!" Marco’s voice barked over the radio amidst the deafening roar of assault rifles. "They brought heavy artillery, Boss! RPGs on the perimeter! Dante’s team is holding the grand staircase, but they're pushing hard toward the east wing!"

"I'm coming down," Luca said coldly.

He didn't take the grand staircase. He took the private elevator concealed behind the bookshelf in his study, descending straight into the ground-floor security hub.

When the elevator doors slid open, Luca stepped into a combat zone.

The sound of shattering glass and heavy caliber rounds chewing through mahogany woodwork filled the air. Moretti guards in tactical gear were firing down from the mezzanine, dropping Bellini hitmen as they tried to swarm through the shattered front entryway.

Salvatore Bellini had made a fatal miscalculation. He assumed that because Luca had just returned from Europe, the Moretti estate would be lightly defended.

He didn't realize that Luca Moretti’s estate was a military fortress.

Luca raised his weapon. With terrifying precision, he fired three controlled bursts, dropping two masked attackers attempting to flank the grand staircase.

"Suppressing fire on the courtyard!" Luca commanded through the comms. "Activate the perimeter defensive turrets!"

"Activating now!" the control room technician shouted.

On the sweeping front lawn, concealed automated defense turrets rose from the manicured hedges. High-powered spotlights flooded the driveway, blinding the remaining Bellini reinforcements. The turrets opened fire with deafening, synchronized roar, tearing through the engines of the getaway vehicles and neutralizing the perimeter threat within sixty seconds.

Silence fell over the estate—heavy, smoking, and absolute.

Twelve Bellini soldiers lay dead or wounded in the courtyard. The rest had scattered into the night like rats.

Marco walked through the smoking wreckage of the foyer, stepping over shattered glass, his rifle lowered. He wiped a streak of soot from his forehead and looked at Luca.

"Perimeter clear, Boss. The surviving drivers fled toward Interstate 55."

"Did we take prisoners?" Luca asked, lowering his weapon.

"Two," Marco said. "One of them is Salvatore Bellini's youngest nephew, Enzo."

Luca’s eyes gleamed with lethal calculation. "Drag him into the courtyard. Put him on speakerphone. Call Salvatore Bellini right now."

Marco dialed the number on an encrypted burner phone and shoved it against Enzo’s bruised, bleeding face.

The phone rang twice before a raspy, arrogant voice answered. "Enzo? Is it done? Is Moretti dead?"

"Salvatore," Luca’s voice cut through the line, calm, cold, and dripping with venom.

A heavy silence fell over the other end of the phone.

"Moretti..." Salvatore breathed, his confidence instantly evaporating.

"Your nephew has three broken ribs and two minutes to live," Luca said evenly. "You sent men into my home. You endangered my wife and my daughter."

"Your wife is dead, Luca! Vanessa told me everything—you're having a psychotic break over a common maid!"

"My wife is alive. And by sunrise, you will realize the magnitude of the mistake you made," Luca said. "Call an emergency meeting of the Five Families Commission. 9:00 AM at the Chicago Union League. You will answer for this unauthorized strike before the Council."

"And if I refuse?" Salvatore sneered.

Luca didn't answer with words. He gestured to Marco.

A single shot rang out into the night air.

Enzo slumped to the pavement.

Luca brought the phone back to his ear. "If you refuse, Salvatore, I won't wait for the Commission. I will eradicate every person who shares your bloodline before breakfast. See you at nine."

Luca hung up and tossed the phone onto the concrete.

He turned around, took off his tactical vest, and walked back up the grand staircase.

When he reached the master suite, he knocked on the bathroom door in a specific rhythm: three slow taps, two fast ones.

"Emily," he called out softly. "It's me. It's over."

The heavy lock clicked. The door swung open.

Emily stood there, her eyes wide with shock, holding Grace tightly against her chest. When she saw Luca standing there—splattered with soot and sweat, but completely unharmed—her knees buckled.

Luca caught them both in his arms.

He pulled them against his chest, wrapping his massive frame around his wife and daughter on the floor of the bedroom. Emily buried her face into his neck, sobbing uncontrollably, her fingers digging into his shirt.

"You're okay," Luca murmured, his voice breaking as he kissed her hair, then Grace’s forehead. "You're both okay. I have you. I will never let anyone hurt you again."

"Luca..." Emily choked out, looking up at him through her tears. "I was so scared."

"I know, baby. I know," he whispered.

For the first time in five years, Emily didn't pull away when his lips found hers. The kiss was desperate, salty with tears, filled with half a decade of unexpressed longing, grief, and an unbreakable love that had survived hell itself.

When they finally broke apart, Grace looked up at them with a sleepy smile.

"Are we a family now?" Grace asked.

Luca looked at Emily, his eyes pleading, laying his heart entirely bare.

Emily reached up, her trembling fingers gently cupping his cheek, brushing away a smudge of soot.

May you like

"Yes, Grace," Emily whispered softly, looking into Luca's eyes. "We're a family."
