Chapter 6 - An Unbreakable Sanctuary

The private medical suite on the third floor of the Moretti estate had been outfitted with the finest obstetric technology Northwestern Memorial Hospital could provide.

Two specialized labor and delivery nurses, vetted personally by Dr. Vance and bound by strict confidentiality, moved with quiet, practiced efficiency. The room was bathed in soft, warm amber lighting; classical music hummed from hidden speakers, and the wide windows offered a breathtaking view of Lake Michigan dancing under the afternoon sun.

By five in the evening, my contractions had shifted from painless tightening to powerful, rhythmic surges that gripped my entire body.

"Seven centimeters dilated," Dr. Vance announced, peeling off his sterile gloves. "The baby has dropped into optimal position. You are doing extraordinarily well, Emma. Your blood pressure is stable, and the baby's heart rate is textbook perfect."

Another wave hit me.

A sharp, breathless moan tore from my lips. I arched my back against the pillows, my hands clawing desperately at the bedsheets as the pain threatened to drown me.

Suddenly, a large, warm hand engulfed mine.

"Breathe, Emma," Leo’s deep voice cut through the fog of pain. "Match my breath. In through your nose. Out through your mouth."

I squeezed his hand with all the strength left in my body, my fingernails digging deep into his skin, hard enough to draw blood. Leo didn't even flinch. He stayed bent over the side of the bed, his free hand gently brushing damp strands of hair from my forehead.

"That’s it," he murmured, his voice a steady, hypnotic rhythm. "Let the wave rise. Let it peak. Now let it go."

The contraction slowly released its grip. I collapsed back against the pillows, gasping for air, tears of exhaustion streaming into my ears.

"I can't do this, Leo," I sobbed, shaking my head against the linen. "It hurts too much. I want Matteo... I want him here..."

Leo’s eyes filled with tears, but his voice remained steady and unshakable.

"Matteo is here, Emma," Leo whispered, leaning close so only I could hear. "Look at me. Look at my eyes."

I forced my blurry eyes open to meet his.

"Matteo’s courage is inside you," Leo said, his voice trembling with profound emotion. "You survived five months of cruelty. You protected this child while working on your feet until your body broke. You carried him through the valley of the shadow of death, Emma. You are the strongest woman I have ever known. My brother chose you because you have the heart of a lion."

Fresh strength surged through my veins at his words. The doubt that had plagued me for months evaporated.

"Next contraction, Emma!" Dr. Vance’s voice called out from the foot of the bed. "The cervix is fully dilated. When you feel the urge, I need you to push."

The next wave didn't just knock on the door—it shattered it.

A primal, overwhelming pressure gripped my hips.

"Now, Emma!" Dr. Vance commanded. "Chin to your chest! Give me ten seconds of everything you have!"

I gripped Leo’s hand with both of mine and pushed with every ounce of life, love, and fury inside my soul. I screamed—a raw, guttural cry that echoed off the high ceilings, pouring eight months of grief, fear, and survival into that single, monumental effort.

"Keep going, Emma!" Leo urged, his voice breaking with fierce pride. "I see him! He’s right there! Bring my nephew home!"

"Stop and breathe!" Dr. Vance ordered.

I fell back, gasping, my vision blackening at the edges.

"One more push, Emma!" the nurse urged, holding an oxygen mask near my face. "The head is delivering! One more big push!"

The final surge rose within me like a tidal wave.

I didn't think about the pain. I thought about the little Italian restaurant in the snowstorm. I thought about the courthouse where Matteo kissed my forehead in a borrowed blue dress. I thought about the man who had loved me enough to leave a trail of truth that saved my life from beyond the grave.

"Matteo!" I screamed, bearing down with the last breath in my lungs.

A sudden, warm sensation of release washed over my entire body.

The crushing pressure vanished.

For two terrifying seconds, the room fell completely, utterly silent. The only sound was my ragged, shallow gasping and the steady beep of the heart monitor.

Then, piercing the stillness like the ringing of a church bell on Easter morning, a sound filled the room.

A loud, furious, indignant wail.

*Waaaah! Waaaaah!*

I burst into hysterical, breathless sobs, covering my face with my shaking hands.

"He's here," Dr. Vance laughed, his eyes shining with tears as he quickly wiped the newborn with a warm sterile towel. "A beautiful, healthy baby boy. APGAR score of nine. Look at those lungs!"

Leo stood frozen at the side of the bed.

The undisputed boss of Chicago—a man who had faced down federal prosecutors, armed cartels, and corporate titans without blinking—was openly, unashamedly weeping. Tears poured down his tanned cheeks, dripping onto his cashmere sweater as he stared at the tiny, squirming bundle in Dr. Vance's arms.

"Emma," Dr. Vance said gently, laying the baby directly onto my bare chest. "Meet your son."

The moment the warm, wet weight of my baby touched my skin, he stopped crying.

He let out a tiny, shuddering sigh, his tiny wrinkled face turning into the hollow of my neck. He had a thick shock of jet-black hair—identical to the hair in the photograph Matteo had given me—and tiny, perfect hands that instantly latched onto my index finger.

"Oh, my God," I wept, kissing the top of his damp head. "Oh, my sweet boy... my beautiful baby..."

Leo slowly knelt beside the bed. His hands were shaking so violently he had to rest his forearms against the mattress.

"Leo," I whispered through my tears, looking down at the magnificent man who had saved our lives. "Come meet him."

Leo hesitated, as if he believed his rough, scarred hands might break something so pure.

"Go on," I encouraged softly. "He knows his uncle."

Slowly, reverently, Leo reached out with one trembling finger. The newborn instinctively turned his head, his tiny fist releasing my finger and clamping tightly around Leonardo’s thumb.

Leonardo let out a ragged, choked sob. He bowed his head until his forehead rested against my baby’s tiny shoulder.

May you like

"Hello, little Matteo," Leo whispered, his voice shattering into a million pieces of pure love. "Welcome home. Your uncle has got you now. Nothing is ever going to hurt you again."
