Chapter 8 - The Viper’s Trap

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of black ties, diamonds, and champagne flutes.
Over two hundred high-ranking members of Chicago's elite were in attendance. At the center of the raised VIP dais stood Don Antonio Bellini—a portly, silver-haired man with cold, calculating eyes—beside his daughter, Vanessa.
Vanessa was holding court, dressed in an extravagant white lace gown that looked obscenely close to a wedding dress. She was sipping vintage champagne, laughing with the wives of city aldermen, clearly believing that her triumph was imminent. She believed Luca was running late due to "dock disputes" and that Michael was finalizing the paperwork.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung wide open.
"Announcing," the master of ceremonies boomed across the microphone, "Don Luca Moretti, Head of the Moretti Family Syndicate!"
The music stopped. The room fell into an expectant hush as the crowd parted like the Red Sea.
Luca strode into the ballroom, looking every bit the apex predator he was. His custom-tailored charcoal tuxedo was immaculate, his posture imposing, and his jaw set like chiseled granite.
And on his arm, dressed in the emerald silk gown that shimmered under the golden chandeliers, was me.
Murmurs erupted across the ballroom.
*"Who is that woman?"*
*"Where is his fiancée?"*
*"Is that... is that the maid from his estate?"*
Vanessa’s champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering on the marble floor with a sharp crash. Her face drained of all color, turning as white as her lace dress.
Don Antonio’s eyes narrowed into slits as Luca led me up the carpeted steps of the VIP dais, stopping directly in front of the Bellini patriarch.
"Luca," Don Antonio said, forcing a tight, patronizing smile. "You arrive late to your own engagement dinner. And you bring... an unfamiliar guest. Where is Michael?"
"Michael is currently reflecting on his life choices in a cell on the south docks, Antonio," Luca said calmly, his voice ringing through the silent ballroom.
A collective gasp echoed across the room.
Vanessa took a trembling step forward. "Luca, darling... what are you talking about? What is she doing here? Why are you humiliating me like this?"
Luca turned his gaze upon her. It was a look of such absolute disdain and disgust that Vanessa physically recoiled.
"You called Hannah a homeless beggar last night, Vanessa," Luca said, loud enough for every senator, judge, and syndicate captain to hear. "You threw my seventy-eight-year-old mother into a freezing laundry room, removed her bed, and told her she had no home. You plotted with my traitorous brother to steal my father's sister's home on West Addison."
Don Antonio’s face darkened with dangerous fury. "Luca, watch your tongue! You are making wild accusations against my family! We have an alliance!"
"We have no alliance, Antonio," Luca replied coldly.
With a smooth, deliberate motion, Luca reached into his tuxedo jacket and pulled out the signed contract and the handwritten addendum. He tossed the papers onto the high table directly in front of the Bellini Don.
"That is your signature, Antonio," Luca declared. "And that handwritten note is your daughter’s plan to slip a fatal dose of neurotoxin into my wedding champagne so you could seize my family's shipping ports."
The ballroom erupted into chaos.
Several syndicate captains loyal to the Moretti family immediately reached beneath their jackets, surrounding the dais. Don Antonio looked at the papers, his hands shaking, realizing that the trap had completely collapsed on his head.
"You... you can't prove this!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice turning shrill and hysterical. "It’s a forgery! That maid made this up to tear us apart! She’s nothing! She cleans toilets! She’s garbage!"
Luca stepped forward, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying finality.
"Hannah Collins has more honor in her little finger than your entire bloodline," Luca said. "You are finished in this city, Vanessa. By midnight, federal agents will receive copies of every illegal wire transfer you and your father processed through the Addison shell company. And if any member of the Bellini syndicate sets foot on Moretti territory after tonight, it will be considered an act of war—a war you will lose in forty-eight hours."
Don Antonio grabbed his hysterical daughter by the arm, his face pale with defeat. He knew he had been outmaneuvered completely. Without Michael’s inside access, and with the federal evidence hanging over their heads, the Bellini family was ruined.
"Get out of my sight," Luca commanded.
Vanessa wept hysterically as her father dragged her off the stage, fleeing the ballroom under the hostile, mocking glares of Chicago's high society.
Luca turned to face the stunned crowd of two hundred guests. He raised his hand, signaling the orchestra to resume playing.
"The engagement is canceled," Luca announced with a confident smile. "Tonight is no longer an engagement party. Tonight is a celebration of the safe return of my Aunt Sofia Moretti, and the honoring of our new Head of Estate."
He turned toward me, extending his hand.
